Buckshot Bear Posted March 1 Posted March 1 How much protection do naval ships have against drone/missile swarms? I know that they have jammers to try and bring them down at long distances and then the SeaRam missiles and then Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) if the drones/missiles get through the first curtains of defense. Widder, SASS #59054 Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Just a guess, but a single ship has 'some' protection against a large swarm of incoming. But a group of ships definitely multiplies the protection greatly and would greatly minimize the effects of incoming. Just my guess, of course. ..........Widder 1 Quote
watab kid Posted March 1 Posted March 1 i was thinking similarly - dont currently converse with naval personnel but im thinking because of past communications that they have defenses 1 1 Quote
Rye Miles #13621 Posted March 1 Posted March 1 I found this for whatever it’s worth Most modern ships use: Advanced radar systems (e.g., phased-array radars like the SPY family) Electro-optical/infrared cameras Electronic warfare sensors to detect control signals Signal intelligence systems 1 Quote

Much of the below applies to shore based anti- ship missiles as well 1. Distance. In general a carrier group is going to remain several hundred miles off the coast constantly moving.. Which makes it hard to find. 2. Active jammers 3. Any drone that can fly hundreds of miles can be shot down by the surface to air missiles carried by a carrier's escort. 4. CIWS for anything that gets past 2 & 3 Any drone that operates autonomously will have to have some form of acquisition, usually radar, occasionally optical. Most drones do not have a long range (more than 50 miles for purposes of discussion) method of acquisition or the fuel for extended searches. Most/All of the major shore based anti- ship missiles and drone sites are probably destroyed already. The Iranian Navy and Air Force are in the process of being destroyed and are unlikely to make a significant difference in what is happening. 1 Quote
Texas Jack Black Posted March 1 Posted March 1 Jamming works VERY well But, we never know what might happen. 1 Quote
watab kid Posted March 2 Posted March 2 thats impressive , dont want to be on the receiving end of that , and i feel well defended knowing our armed service has that and more to protect us Quote
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Lets not forget those 'speial' ships that have cloaking capabilities or Stealth. They show us on the news the ones they want us to see...... but what about those that are there which we can't see. Klingons beware! ..........Widder 1 2 Quote

In some ships and locations, a Secret clearance wouldn't even let you thru the door of the radio shack. Anything less than a TS, Crypto or CYOP rating will get a Marine to draw down on ya entering some areas. And those Marines don't know if you're a 'rabbit' or not. ..........Widder Edited March 3 by Widder, SASS #59054 1 Quote

Really enjoyed this....I take my cowboy hat off to the sailors that climb inside those tiny bunks....I don't suffer from claustrophobia but I reckon I would discover that I did if I had to sleep in there. I also get seasick if I take a bath!!!! 1 Quote

If you think that the Sailors have it tight, Marine berthing spaces are far worse. The racks are 4 high in the compartment. The bottom one is literally on the floor, the next about 18 inches above that, etc. They are also only about 18 inches wide. They share a common "aisle" with the next row, which is about 24 inches away. Marines have take turns getting out of their racks because there's not enough room for all eight guys to get up at once. 2 Quote

They have slack in them so that you kind of sink in, so that's not likely to happen. But climbing into one after returning from Shore Leave while drunk is something. 1 1 1 Quote
