I don't see where you have anything to apologize for.

I was out in the backyard - 2016 according to the date on the picture - and I saw a hawk flying around overhead. Then he landed in the pecan tree. Cool! Get the camera!!

Lovely picture, ain't it?

Good thing I know it's a hawk. B)

Really? Spenser for Hire is a detective television show based on the Spenser books by Robert Parker. The same guy that wrote the Jesse Stone books.

In the books Spenser has a friend, but in the TV show he's more of a sidekick. Big shaven-headed black guy who only has one name - you know, like Cher. His name is Hawk.

This is our local Coopers Hawk. I have some other shots of a Coopers Hawk from a couple of years ago  somewhere

Joe, I think your Hawk looks like a Red Shouldered Hawk.

thats cool , its fun to see them up close and personal , majestic birds , beauty in the raw power they posses ,

ive had red tails mostly - and eagle and an osprey , [we live on a river here just off the mississippi ,] but one winter we had a shrike - unexpected and never recurred , he killed a cardinal and ate it on our walk , did have a pair of greathorned owls build a nest over my drive one year and raised two babies - they used to leave a little bloody piece of meat on my wifes windsheid when she parked under the nest - always thought it was a peace offering ,

according to a friend thats into the lore that owl is my totem and i wear one of the feathers they left behind in my cowboy hat

Thank you.  One app said Red-Shouldered, another said Cooper's. Both are equally likely in Sonoma County.

When it landed, just glancing out of the corner of my eye at the motion,  I thought it was a Band-Tailed Pigeon.  Size and general color about the same.  And it was about the right time of day. Then I replayed what I saw,  "Hey! That stripe on the tail is wrong!" So started opening the camera on my phone.

On some of the Backyard Birds FB groups there are always people whining about raptors scaring off or eating "their" birds.

I try to point out that those aren't "their" birds, that they have created an artificial little habitat that wild birds have taken advantage of,  and that the predators are just another wild bird that is taking advantage of the artificial habitat they have created.  They should count their blessings if they are fortunate enough to witness a hawk taking its prey.

We have a pair of Red Shoulder Hawks that live on our farm.  They perch on my tree tubes all the time.  I plan on building a raptor perch for them.

Really.  I knew it was a show or movie,  but never watched it,  never even paid attention to the commercials for it.

Never read anything by Parker either.

I like his Spenser books, his Jesse Stone books, and his books about the female private detective, Sunny Randall. Don't really like his westerns, though. He needed to stay in present day.

Exactly right.

I can tell when the hawks are about. The little birds eat very early in the morning and they eat from the feeders nearest the bushes so they can hide and make their getaway. Also, the blue jays sound their alarms if a hawk is nearby.
The hawk got a pigeon yesterday. This means the little birds are safe for a couple of days.

We have been visited by what I think was a White Tailed Kite as well. I have seen it twice in 2 years but I haven’t gotten a photo of it. It’s a beautiful bird as well.

From what I have read they are very rare here. They are mostly found in the South and Texas.

Good series.  Spenser's first girlfriend is absolutely one of the sexiest women ever on TV.

I still haven't figured out where Hawk carried that big S&W .44 mag so it didn't show.

yes indeed , i was very fortunate in that a red tail hawk took one of our pesky chipmonks on our patio while i was grilling about ten feet from where i was standing , after he pounced on it he looked up and noticed me but just picked it up and flew off with it , the sound of it striking the patio was startling to say the least ,

Agree on both accounts. Barbara Stock was smokin' back then,barbara-stock-1-051625-8df020e03560461f84d2f2ab0266bb24.jpg

But she wasn't even close to Lindsay Bloom as Velda on Mike Hammer. qykhvHbrmCBGTR9bkZlpJMMUIAy.jpg

Hawk started the series with an "N" Frame, but later carried an 8" nickeled Colt Python. But yeah, WHERE did he conceal it?!?!hqdefault.jpg

Joe, sorry for derailing another thread. A while back we had a hawk with a dead pigeon in one talon sitting right on out back fence. VERY cool.?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Letterbox&imcolor=%23000000&letterbox=false

Sorry.

Sorry.

I've said it before,  I don't mind a thread I started going off the rails,  adult conversations do that.  I just want there to be some sort of reasonable connection, some sort of chain to connect everything so it can be tracked back logically to the original subject.

So we have

Hawk (avian)

to

Hawk (detectives) through misunderstanding

to

Handguns

Writer

Actresses

now, thanks to your apology, it can reasonably and logically vere off to locomotives and/or train wrecks.

One of my favorite television series is

Connections by James Burke

Fascinating series.

That's nothing.

While Duncan MacLeod, of the clan McLeod, on the television show Highlander, usually wore a trench coat

He occasionally wore a bomber jacket.

Tell me where he hid that damn katana under a waist length jacket. B)

I think that there was magic involved. That makes as much sense as "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!"

I actually came across a pair doing the deed, hawk style.  Good light, Pro grade Nikon camera with a long enough lens.  If I can find the images in the photo files, I'll post them - a once in a lifetime sequence even for a lifelong photo nut.

Not to be confused with a bustard.

Which, I am pretty sure, is considered an edible game bird.

There is a pair of Cooper's Hawks that nests close to the house every year.  Flight school is usually late June/early July.  The roof peak of the garage is a favorite practice spot.

'S fine. It's a weird and convoluted thread.

I'm the opposite. The television is the background that gets peripheral attention.
