I have seen a Bullsnake climb a tree, and Rattlesnakes apparently can.   Found this out after half a dozen years working outdoors in Montana!  I rarely looked up until after I saw the Bullsnake, and that on my own property behind the house!

When I lived in Southern New Mexico, it wasn't unusual to see rattlesnakes moving from bush to bush in the top of the rabbit brush. The ground was often nearly too hot to touch, so I guess this was their way to keep cooler.

That will teach you to keep your head up and your eyes open.

On my Great Grandmothers farm in Springhead, Florida, there used to be all kinds of snakes that used to "climb" the small trees in her yard and field in attempts to get away from her dog Shorty. They rarely got away as that dog would "climb" the tree after them. Yes, the dog would "climb" the tree after them, grab them with his mouth, jump out of the tree and kill the snakes. They only got away if he fell out of the tree or if they got higher than he could "climb". They were mainly corn snakes and black racers but he was known to kill rattlesnakes also but the rattlers never seemed to get in the trees. I haven't thought about that dog for a long time.

I was once outside and heard a group of Blue Jay birds really screaming down in the woods behind my house.  I walked down near them to see what the issue was and they were dive bombing in the top of a big oak tree.  As I watched, a very long black snake fell from the tree.  It looked like a garden hose spiraling as it fell to the ground.   I decided to go back to the yard.......

I rescued a tree climbing red ratsnake once when I was a parkmranger. But that’s a whole story.
