But he was great in Band of Brothers. I hated him.

Thanks. Since I didn't have context for it I was confused. Utah Bob's comment about him doing a good job in Band of Brothers gave me the actor because one time when I turned on Big Bang Theory a minute early,  Friends was finishing up and that actor was in the little bit I saw. "HEY! That's the same guy who played Sobel, I think!" So I googled it. 

 

Funny thing about Sobel is that while he was roundly despised, the men gave him credit for the training and unit cohesion that helped them survive.

I've heard that as well.  In general he had the knowledge and skills and was a good to very good trainer, but if BoB was remotely accurate about Sobel (the family disagreed with the portrayal) he lacked the people skills to be an effective leader.  Not the first or last time that's happened.
