Mexican Buffet Restaurant?

Recommended Posts

:D We're headin' out on Friday night, 6-16. Doin' a little sightseein' on the way---Stopping in Bakersfield, Flagstaff and Santa Fe, to arrive at ABQ on 6-19.

Our biggest quest is: Does anyone know where we might find a Mexican restaurant with a buffet?

All suggestions gladly welcomed.

Thanks---------- :D

Gardunos in the Winrock Shopping Center in Albuquerque (I-40 & Louisiana Blvd. just north of the exit) has a quality Mexican buffet. Panchos Mexican Buffet on north San Mateo Blvd. in Albuquerque is not very good. (It's pretty greasy.) El Comedor in Moriarty is better but is below my standards.

The Sandia Casino between Sante Fe and Albuquerque (actually just north of Albuquerque) operates a quality buffet as a loss leader to get people into the Casino. It's not Mexican but you'll get lots of excellent food for a good price.

Why, thanky sir. Much appreciate the info. We'll go for the one in Winrock S.C., but we may also have to try 'tother one, as my pard likes grease (yuck!!)--but I kin always find something edible even at grease joints.

'Scuze me--what's wrong with Taco Bell? It shur fits when there's hankerin' for a touch (just a little touch, mind you) of TexMex--but would not keep on my regular list of places to visit often, either.

The Gardunos mentioned is one of our favorite places to eat in ABQ. I believe the buffet is only at lunch and possibly only M-F. Great food whether menu or buffet.....the margaritas are sooooo good (hit happy hour around 5 PM).

TB ain't Tex-Mex,it's some sorta Kalifornia concoction,I mean,black olives?!?

Guess I'm spoiled, livin' most of my life in the Southwest. There's so many good New Mexican places here ain't no sense in eatin' at TB.There's also several authentic Mexican food places in Albuquerque.

But for real Tex-Mex I go to San Antonio.

Hank: I gew up in Tucson, so also love SW-mex food. But, when you have to go on the cheap, TB does fill a need. I only eat tacos and beans; guess the rest of the menu is sort of a Kalifornia thing. I really miss some Tucson restaurants--Pancho's on Grant Rd., Club 21 on Oracle Rd., La Fuente, El Charro, Casa Molina--oh dear--now I'm gettin' the hungries and we haven't even left KA yet. Lookin' forward to tryin' some ABQ restaurants.

Since this thread has taken the turn to "Mexican Restaurants that are good but not too expensive" let me recommend the following:

Bea's Restaurant; 8415 Central Ave NE (has a lunch buffet)

Los Cuates; 4901 Lomas N E

Cervantes Restaurant & Lounge; 5801 Gibson Blvd SE

Eloy's Mexican Restaurant 1508; Wyoming Blvd N E Ste C

None of these places are premium dining experiences but you'll get pretty good Mexican food at reasonable prices. Los Cuates and Cervantes actually have some ambiance. Beas is in a neighborhood best avoided after sundown.

Ok,Ok y'all,I'll lay off TB!!! :D

Another place the missus & I like in Albuquerque is Papa Felipe's,corner of Eubank & Menaul, decent food & prices & a full bar.

One place that gets overlooked in Moriarty is Nachos.Don't go there if you're in a hurry, but they're better than El Comedor (the Anaya family's gonna get me for that! :D).

In Edgewood,Chili Hills (just north of the stoplight on the east side of 344) is pretty decent,I recommend the green chile enchiladas & the carne adovada (pork cooked in red chile) is good too.

One thing I'll mention, for the folks who ain't been here before,is that Edgewood has a Smith's (division of Krogers) grocery store, they have a fine meat department,if there's somethin' special you want just ask.

They also have a full liquor dept. & a pharmacy (which is faster than the Walgreens....and I ain't just sayin' that 'cause the missus is a pharmacist there :D ) & they carry Sadie's Salsa, make sure you get enuf to take home with you.

Which reminds me,Sadie's is also an Albuquerque institution,it's on north 4th street,a good drive but well worth it!

Well, let's twist it to "Mexican Restaurants that are REALLY good and know how to make great Margaritas and are in neighborhoods not requiring body armor". Then what do we have? If I had liked buffets I wouldn't have left the Army.

RE: "Mexican Restaurants that are REALLY good and know how to make great Margaritas and are in neighborhoods not requiring body armor"

Welcome to Albuquerque! Driving in ABQ is tricky, half the cars go 10 miles under the speed limit and half go 10 miles over, and remember there shall be absolutely no use of turn signals. No body armor required just keep all your valuables out of your car, and don't read a map in public.

The top two restaurants on my list are Sadies's and El Pinto. Sadie's has the best margaritas. The owners insist on filling every glass with half alcohol. Bring a designated driver, and order the carafe :D A close second is El Pinto, their margaritas are good, especially with quality tequila, and the food is great. El Pinto has atmosphere, so request the patio if the temperature is cool enough outside.

Sadie's is at 6230 4th St. NW 505-345-5339

El Pinto is at 10,500 4th St. NW 505-890-8547

Enjoy! See you at the Belle Union!

I'm please to oblige you Capt'n. The Gardunos mentioned at the beginning of this thread meets your standards. El Pinto in the Valley is probably my favorite fine Mexican restaurant. It's a place I like to take my wife. George Bush agrees because he took Laura there in February this year. Further, the Wall Street Journal rated El Pinto's nacho number one in the US.

Now if you are a democrat visiting this wire by accident you may prefer the Hacienda Mexican restaurant in Old Town. President Clinton ate there. The chile is a little weak (only Gringo strength) but it's an OK place to end a day of shopping in Old Town - and you don't need body armor. My wife likes the Hacienda because she LIKES Gringo-strength chile.

I you visit the restaurants Amber Ale or I mentioned and like their salsa you can find Sadie's, Cervante's and El Pinto's salsas for sale in local supermarkets. Rancid Roy and Irish Jack Cleary bribed the border guards so they'd let anyone take cases of salsa back to Texas if they just show a SASS life badge.

Let's see, taking salsa into Texas. Does that replace the phrase, "Taking coals to Newcastle"?

Capt. Baylor,

With all do respect sir, I'd like to mention that the salsa in Texas and the salsa in NM just not quite the same. Both are good, but there are differences.

Along this line I'd like to mention what I saw at a grocery store the other day, Saturday, it was. To paraphrase a sign in the produce section: " In honor of Father's Day, Habanaros, 10 for a $1.00."

We ate at El Pinto. We didn't find it necessary to buy any of their salsa to take back to Texas. Their salsa was not bad, just unremarkable. The restaurant is okay, but there are probably 20 Mexican restaurants in Houston that do at least as well, and for te prices charged there, a lot better. Ambiance 10, service 5 (would have been 10, but when we complained about the chile con queso, they didn't replace it), salsa 5, chips 8, food 7, Margaritas 8 (we bought the $7.95 ones. The Redhead makes better ones and remembers the salt). I like New Mexico Mexican quisine. The last time we were in Santa Fe we found 4 or 5 really good Mexican restaurants. This just didn't stand out.

We'll be looking forward to trying different Mexican restaurants there next year.

Captain Baylor,

Sorry that El Pinto disappointed you.  I would recommend that you try Gardunos (in the north valley) next year.

It was a pleasure to see you in the flesh.

Looking forward to Gardunos. Enjoyed meeting you, Reverend. Thanks for the recommendation.

Post EOT culinary review .... Pie Crust and I passed on Garduno's as we visit their Las Vegas venue from time to time. A good spot but wanted something new. Ended up at Little Anita's one night. Like walking into a Denny's for ambiance but I had checked the menu in the phonebook and liked what I saw. We were out of there for $28 including $5 tip and we were stuffed. Pleasant service. The Avodaba was first rate as was the Chile Relleno. Like Italian food, other than pasta driven menus ? Try Vivace in the 3300 block of Central. Yellow Fin Tuna steak in a honey dijon / balsamic glaze. Nice Italian wine list. Very fresh salad and vegetables. Will go back next year. The Cooperage ... great soup and salad bar ... dark dining room ... Pie Crust loved her Buffalo New York cut steak and I had a spicy salmon dish. Classy service. Rudy's BBQ on Carlisle ... this place is fabulous  . Ribs, pulled pork, brisket. Price was right and the place was set up for eatin' ribs and havin' fun. Just off I40 so pop into town for takeout back to Founders Ranch. Maybe an hour and 15 roundtrip including picking up your chow.

Silvermane .... whose girth attests to his culinary expertise :D
