I've heard that they call it "dynamic pricing" and it is actually in the process of being implemented.

I've also left stuff at both self-checkout and staffed checkout.

My wife pointed these out to me the other day at our local walmart.  Guess I am done shopping there if I am going to be subject to pricing increases because of my income or my "social score".  This BS needs to be challenged in court immediately!

How would you know if it's happening? Does the price change before your eyes? It would likely have to happen at the register where it's being scanned, no?

True, it's dynamic pricing at the register that I'm concerned about.

As I suspected. A freakin’ tempest in a teacup.

I went on DDG and asked; How does walmart dynamic pricing work?

DDG AI POSTED THIS

Walmart's dynamic pricing uses electronic shelf labels that allow prices to be updated quickly based on market demand and competitor pricing. This system enables Walmart to adjust prices in real-time, which can lead to more competitive pricing and improved inventory management.

Overview of Walmart's Dynamic Pricing

Walmart's dynamic pricing strategy allows the company to adjust prices based on market demand, competitor pricing, and other external factors. This approach helps Walmart remain competitive and responsive to changes in the retail environment.

Key Features of Dynamic Pricing

Price Updates

  • Speed: Prices can be updated within minutes using digital shelf labels, compared to the traditional method that took up to two days.
  • Frequency: Walmart can change prices daily based on supplier input and market conditions.

Technology Utilization

  • Digital Shelf Labels: These electronic tags enable quick price changes across thousands of products.
  • Mobile App: Employees use the Me@Walmart app to make price adjustments efficiently.

Benefits of Dynamic Pricing

Improved Efficiency

  • Labor Savings: Reduces the time employees spend changing prices manually, allowing them to focus on customer service.
  • Inventory Management: Helps in managing stock levels and discounts for items nearing expiration.

Competitive Edge

  • Market Responsiveness: Walmart can react quickly to competitor pricing and market trends, ensuring they remain attractive to consumers.
  • Consumer Insights: The system can analyze purchasing patterns to optimize pricing strategies.

Consumer Considerations

While dynamic pricing can lead to better deals during low-demand periods, it may also raise concerns about price fluctuations during peak demand times. Some consumers view this as potential price gouging, although Walmart has stated it does not plan to implement surge pricing like some other industries.

How does Walmart's dynamic pricing compare to traditional pricing strategies?

Walmart's dynamic pricing involves frequent adjustments based on market conditions and competition, often influenced by online retailers like Amazon, while traditional pricing strategies typically maintain stable prices for longer periods. This shift allows Walmart to respond quickly to demand fluctuations, but it raises concerns about potential price gouging during high-demand periods.

The above doesn't sound to me like different patrons are paying a different price based on their habits or status financially.

A while back they tried variable speed limits on a stretch of Interstate here.  The speed limit would change depending on the time of day and volume of traffic.

As you might imagine it was quite the clusterflop and did not go over well.  I understand that most, if not all, the people that got speeding tickets during this fiasco were let off.

I hardly ever go to WalMart except for occasionally to pick up .22’s or if they have LRLN Win shotgun shells. I may pick up a few other things but I don’t go there regularly. I’ll have to check it out next time I go.
