Born in Pennsylvania in 1924, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and trained as an aviation cadet before becoming a commissioned officer. Assigned as a bombardier on B‑25 Mitchell bombers, he flew missions across the Pacific at a time when low‑altitude bombing runs were some of the most dangerous assignments in the theater.

Between 1942 and 1945, Johnson completed 44 combat missions, a number later confirmed by military records and fact‑checking organizations. His service wasn’t without peril: during a March 1945 mission over the Philippines, his aircraft was hit by Japanese fire and forced to crash‑land near Zamboanga. Johnson survived the crash but sustained injuries that eventually led to his medical discharge. His wartime experience earned him several commendations and shaped much of his quiet resilience later in life.

After the war, Johnson used the GI Bill to study acting, eventually building a steady Hollywood career before landing his most iconic role as the endlessly resourceful Professor on Gilligan’s Island. Fans often joked that the Professor could build anything out of coconuts but the calm, capable demeanor he brought to the role was rooted in real‑world experience. His transition from decorated combat aviator to beloved sitcom star remains one of the most surprising and compelling career arcs in American entertainment history.

He is best known as The Professor, but he had many roles in Cowboy movies &TV in the years before Gilligan, mostly as really bad guys.  When I first saw those characters, I was shocked because I had only known him as the mild mannered Professor.

.......... but he couldn't patch a hole in a boat.

If you were on an island with Ginger and Mary Ann would you patch the boat?

One of my favorite Russell Johnson's.

A crate load of silent movie equipment washes up on the island, so they decide to make a movie showing how they were in dire straits and needed help.

One scene has Ginger thanking the professor for all the wonderful things he has done to make their lives better, and telling him that she wishes to show her appreciation. So he sticks his hand out to shake hands with her, and she looks at the camera with a "what the hell is wrong with him" look.

So they do take two, and this time they kiss. First it's just a light press of the lips, then she grabs hold of him, then he grabs hold of her, and then they tongue wrestle for about a minute and a half.

Afterwards Gilligan asked the professor how he could hold his breath for so long.

"Well Gilligan, I am a certified scuba diver."
