You are in a small rubber boat. You do not have oars. You are paddling with your hands.

Do you face the direction you wish to go, moving your arms like you're swimming or like you're on a surfboard?

Or do you face the direction you came from, like you're rowing a boat?

In the novel - Modesty Blaise, The Silver Mistress, if anyone is interested - both times they mentioned crossing the water in the little rubber dinghy, they look backward the way they came.

Just seems wrong to me.

They were influenced by the  Whiffle-Diffle bird.

In this particular instance they were spelunking, and it was easier to carry a deflated rubber boat and a pump down in the cave then it was to drag along a 14 ft bass boat with a 50 horse motor.

Why in hell would I ever be in a cave full of water...or any other cave?

It wasn't full of water. But to get from point A to point B they had to cross about a 50 foot wide patch of water. And you don't want to get wet while you're underground, so they brought the boat.

Seems like anyone smart enough to bring a rubber boat would also bring paddles.

Or oars -- could it be they had oars, so they'd be facing backwards as they rowed? Or was it an, 'I thought YOU brought the oars!' situation?

And yes, some rubber boats have oarlocks built in.

I agree. It wasn't the cave that bothered me. It was the damn music that stayed there for days..."It's a Small World Afterall...."

Well, it just so happens that I have some experience with this. Provided the sides (gunwales) aren’t too fat paddling backwards is easier.
if the sides are fat paddling face forward is easier.

hats a great point - im not inclined to confined spaces either and i would not be going there in the first place - this is not my kinds of exploration - mine is open woods with a fully loaded arm ..........too much back thinking probably but im liking my face to the door and a bit f space to move in .........oh and reliable arms on my person , [ with my ID and my carry permit as required by MN law] im not showing p to a protest - im In favor of the removals - should never have been let in to start with
