Calamity Kris Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I just spent two fun filled days in the horsepistol. I had micro-perf diverticulitis accompanied by a bad kidney infection. Apparently, this had been going on for about a week and I didn't realize what the problem was. I was released late yesterday. I can't recommend it. Don't plan on doing it again. Fired the computer up when I got home last night and my pretty new keyboard toasted my hub. I gave up and went to bed. Glad to be back. Will be making an appointment with a the GI doc I saw in the hospital in the near future. Rant off. 11 Quote

Pat Riot Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I had a couple of bad Diverticulitis attacks and my large intestine was loaded with polyps. In 2000 I had half my large intestine removed. I was 39. According to my surgeon a very stressful childhood and a diet low in fiber and high in processed foods as a kid were the main reasons for my condition. I turn 65 soon and from 2000 to now I have had no issues. I eat a well rounded diet with lots of veggies and I drink lots of water daily. I think I found my diet. Diet is important. If your doctor says you can’t eat nuts or seeds leave quickly. He or she is not up to speed. The AMA determined in 1997 that nuts and seeds play no roll in diverticulitis attacks. I hope you have a good doctor and you get this figured out. 2 2 Quote

I am to take it easy for a few weeks to give things a chance to heal, mashed potatoes instead of broccoli, etc, then I can start back on my regular diet. He also suggested taking a fiber supplement and greatly increasing my water intake. He didn't understand how my previous GI doc didn't see the signs of diverticulitis when I had my last colonoscopy just before my first episode two years ago. Needless to say, we have a new doctor and new organization. He believes in surgery only as a last resort because of the stress it puts the patient through. Sounds like solid advice to me. 11 Quote
Creeker, SASS #43022 Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I'm sure you already have this information - but I will share some "clarification". The interior intestine has pockets, pouches, etc. that line the intestine - the presence of these items is a condition called "diverticulosis" - it is benign and harmless; almost everybody has this condition. When these pockets/ pouches become inflamed or infected - it is only now that a person is undergoing "diverticulitis" - it is/ was commonly believed that eating seeds/ nuts/ popcorn would lead to these materials becoming lodged in the pockets to become inflamed. And there "may" be some correlation between the orientation of these pocket openings and types of materials ingested that makes someone more likely to become infected - but the correlation/ causation theories have serious flaws as well. The infection/ swelling can block the intestine and even cause tearing of the Intestinal walls and possible sepsis (this is what happened to me years back - a week hospitalized and 90 days on IV antibiotics). "I" am a firm believer in hydration as the primary assist in avoiding infection - keeping material moving is key to avoid anything remaining within a pocket and becoming inflamed. I am also a proponent of having appropriate antibiotics on hand to start a regimen immediately at the first pangs of infection and pain. Take care of yourself. 3 Quote
watab kid Posted January 24 Posted January 24 i also had a few bad diverticula infections in the past , ive modified my diet to eliminate that , not what i might enjoy or prefer but im not suffering any more - i once spend numerous days in bed in extreme pain because of it , cashews = no peanuts - was my fix and only at holidays - no strawberrys or other fruit with seeds but then im sure you have already gotten the lecture - relax and enjoy life but never forget to follow the directions or you will be in that pain again 2 Quote

WD Farren Posted January 25 Posted January 25 Psyllium or Metamucil work wonders for daily scraping of pockets. Metamucil is either real sugar, bad for diabetics or Aspertame which is bad for cancer. Walmart psyllium has neither. It dissolves better in warm water. 1 Quote

Utah Bob #35998 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I went through surgery for a blocked intestine caused by diverticulitis. They took out a couple of inches of my colon and I had a colostomy bag for 6 months. Then they hooked everything back up and now I can eat popcorn again. 😍 Good luck to you. 3 1 Quote
