Alpo Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Y'all have probably seen me use that term before. Book I'm reading this fella is fishing for tarpon from the bridge. Nobody can land them because there's so many people on the bridge. The narrator of the book says that's not a problem because nobody really wants to land a tarpon - you can't eat it. So I thought I would investigate that. I did a search Are tarpon good to eat You know the first hit says they have a strong fishy flavor. But the next hit says they have a mild delicate flavor. And the third one says they're highly sought after for both sport and table. It appears the all-knowing internet cannot make up its all-knowing mind. 1 Quote

Cypress Sun Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I've never known anyone that would eat Tarpon. Seen some Hammerheads and Bulls eat them while reeling them in but that's the only thing that will eat them. Don't need the internet to tell me that Tarpon are only edible if you're starving. Quote

There’s a distinct difference between edible and eatable!! 🙄 2 2 1 Quote
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted January 21 Posted January 21 there are two species of tarpon, atlantic and pacific/indian ocean. thay can be found in salt, fresh or brackish water (Per wikipedia) any of those differences can account for differences in edibility. 1 Quote
Cypress Sun Posted January 21 Posted January 21 (edited) I did work at a marina in, of all places, Tarpon Springs Florida. The was a Swedish guy living on a 21' (mol) sailboat that he just bought. I watched him catch a sailcat, gut it, cook it on a grill and eat it. He said he'd eaten them before. He also said he was going to sail that boat to Sweden in a few months. Although it was a death wish in that small, rundown boat, I wished him luck but to me he was clearly off his rocker. Edited January 21 by Cypress Sun 1 Quote

Texas Joker Posted January 21 Posted January 21 And were imported as a sport fish. A blast to catch on ultra light tackle. Fish are food, anybody who has the luxury to say "I don't eat that" should count their blessings 1 Quote

And, you're not supposed to lift them out of the water. This fish will probably die. 2 Quote

Alpo Posted January 26 Author Posted January 26 "Not to be racist" A friend and I were going fishing. We stopped at a convenience store directly across the street from a housing project, and went in to buy some beer. Can't go fishing without beer. When we came back out to the truck there's this black lady there all out of breath. Wanted to know if we had any fish that she could buy. We told her we were sorry but we weren't coming back, we were going out. But she had seen the boat hitched behind the truck, and some fishing poles sticking up over the edge of the boat, and had run across a four-lane highway to get to us to see if we had any fish she could buy. And I never got the impression that she was after trout or bass or some other specific type. Whatever we had she would have been willing to buy it, because fresh fish was fresh fish. 1 Quote
