I bought a Sevens 311 on Gunbroker. If you've been paying attention, you know I've become a complete 16 gauge cult member, so this is a venerable 16 gauge. The chokes are modified (right) and full (left).

As you can see in one of the photos, the right firing pin was stuck and would not retract. I looked this up on YouTube and it's a somewhat known phenomenon, usually caused by dry firing. But there is a fix, so because the rest of the gun looks to be in great condition I took the risk and bought it.

Anyway, I finally picked it up and brought it home. I followed what I learned from YouTube to disassemble the gun and polish up the firing pin and its associated hole. As expected, it was a LOT more challenging than the video maker made it seem, but I got it done. I haven't done any live fire testing because I'm leaving the country tomorrow, but I put some primers into empty shells with my reloader and test fired it that way. It works fine, and the firing pin retracts as it should.

What made me post, however, was the wild stuff I found inside the stock when I went to disassemble it. The highlighter is full of lead shot, probably as a recoil absorber. The other two things are fragments of wheel weights (these went into my melt bucket to become bullets!), wrapped up in what seems to be old bed sheets or pillow case material.

I've heard tons of stories about people taking apart old guns and finding $20 bills, etc., but this was plain weird.

Never found a $20 bill… but I did find a khaki colored shirt pocket in the stock of a no 3 Lee enfield. This is one that has been converted to 308 for use by the Indian Police. It also has a braided string loop attached near the muzzle. I left the string and put the pocket back in the stock when I reassembled it.

I've found two old hunting licenses in shotgun buttstocks and twice found name and address of Swiss soldiers under the buttplates of Swiss K31 rifles.

That's neat. I've found absolutely nothing! :(

A former co-worker of mine bought an old S x S, that had surface rust, at a garage sale for just $15. When he took the butt plate off to rehab it, the stock had been hollowed out perfectly where the hole was and a very small .22 short derringer was in there. The derringer was somewhat corroded with rust, so it must have been in there for some time. The derringer was also loaded.

I never did see the result of the rehab of either the shotgun or the derringer as he relocated out of state shortly afterward. I would have liked to have seen how they came out.

Edit - I've never found anything behind the plates.

A hunting license, a small two bladed pocket knife, and a dozen used-to-be wooden matches wrapped in tin foil, in three different shotguns.

A front sight and three screw-in apertures for a rear sight on a 94 Winchester rifle.
