Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted January 16 Posted January 16 The rarest play in baseball (which only happened once in the entire history of the game) is the triple play where the defense never touched the ball! This happened once in a minor league game spring training game with Buck Showalter managing for a Yankees farm club. (FYI: supposedly Hoyt Wilhelm was charting the pitches and also witnessed it.) Set-Up: Runners on first and second with nobody out obviously. The runners take off on a double steal (it was also a 3–2 count) and the hitter swings and hits a pop-up to the short stop side of the field. The umpire called for an infield fly rule (making the batter out - #1). The base coach is able to turn around the runner heading to third, but the runner from first is not paying attention, rounds the base and goes past the other runner now returning to second. (He is out for passing a runner in front of him - #2). The runner returning to second stops and yells at the other runner (trying to keep him from passing), and as he is standing there, the pop-up ball hits him on its way down (making him out for interference - #3). Not even an unassisted triple play. 2 2 4 Quote

Windy City Kid Posted January 16 Posted January 16 On my son's little league team, there was a boy who was awful. All the parent's felt horrible for him, couldn't throw, catch, or hit. The coach's rule was every position rotates except the pitcher at that age. So this kid is on 3rd. Runners on 3rd and 2nd. Batter hits a rope to 3rd. The kid, out of self protection put his glove out and the ball goes right in his glove. The player on 3rd is off the bag and we scream TOUCH THE BAG!! Which the kid does. The runner on 2nd is so stunned he's already on his way to 3rd. The entire crowd yells TAG HIM!!!! Which he does. Unassisted triple play ending and winning the game! The crowd, both sides lost their minds. The entire team ran and hugged the kid. Afterward, the dad said his kid is done and won't be back. Mic drop for the kid. 5 1 Quote
