The first number indicates the deck you are on. In this case, the second deck, one deck below the main deck. On an aircraft carrier the main deck is the hanger deck. The decks below the hanger deck are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 or 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on and the decks above the hanger deck are 01, 02, 03, 04 and so on or oh one, oh two, oh three and so on. On a Nimitz class carrier, the flight deck is the 04 or oh four level

Is the hanger deck the entire length of the ship?

and for the curious (ALPO) ....

197 is the frame number. It designates how far forward or aft you are. The 3rd number designates how far out from the centerline or the keel you are. Even numbers for port, odd numbers for starboard. The number at the bottom indicates what divisions is responsible for cleaning the compartment. In this case this is a living space or berthing compartment on the second deck frame 197 near the centerline on the starboard side. S2 or supply division 2 is responsible for cleaning it which probably means it’s a supply division berthing area.

I see that you read stuff on Quora, too!

As I understand it, the hanger DECK runs the entire length, but the HANGER BAY is about 2/3 of the length.  The rest being shops, engineering, and the like.

So those shops could be on decks 01, 02, 03?

Well, they could be almost anywhere. But why have shops for work on aircraft and aircraft parts on other decks?

No. The shops are on lower decks. Look at it this way: The raised decks in the "tower" portion of the ship, (or any deck above the main deck on any other type ship,) are the "0" decks. On a Carrier, they work on the aircraft under the flight deck, which is where the shops are. The "0" decks are where the Officers hang out. Nothing gets done there.

Not quite.

01-, 02-, 03- levels (not decks) have shops, berthings, offices, and storerooms - among others.

But generally speaking all of the aircraft maintenence shops are on the hangar deck, +/- one deck.

A useless fact is that some escort carriers during WWII had limited hanger decks or some cases none at all and aircraft were stored, maintained or repaired on the flight deck.  That must have been a lot of fun on the North Atlantic convoys to Russia.

Thanks Chief. It's been a long time, and I never berthed on an Aircraft Carrier while in the Marines. I was on several Troop Transport, Landing Ships, and Helicopter Landing ships, (LSTs, LHAs, and LPDs).

A bit of a correction on the bullseye numbering:

For the example shown 2-197-1-L, the numbering from the centerline starts with 0 as the centerline, with odd to PORT, even to STARBOARD. The number shows a compartment adjacent to the centerline on the PORT side of the ship.

Edit to add:

Chief Rick pointed out I had it wrong, so I checked it out and -- yep, it's ODD to STARBOARD, EVEN to PORT.

No wonder I kept getting lost. Thanks for the catch, chief.

Port is even numbered

ok, hanger deck is not the length of the ship. is it all aft, forward or in the middle?

My best guess, suing the below picture is that the hanger deck runs about where the deck narrows in the front to a line drawn from the back of the finger to the "patio".  The space not used up front would be used for the anchors, chain and their machinery.  In the back some the  arresting gear equipment, the Nixie (towed torpedo decoy) equipment.  The deck itself is probably at least 6 fee thick to allow for the catapult equipment, steam lines for the catapults and equipment related to the the arresting gear cables.  I hope some can remind me what my name is and where I parked my car....

Some floor plans.   I expect that there is considerable variation from  class to class, but these give a general idea.

I've also seen mentioned that the aft end of the hanger deck can be opened for testing engines.
