I seem to recall hearing somewhere that we need less sleep as we age.
Have you found this to be true?

Its occurred to me as I lie awake at night after getting up to go pee.
Maybe it’s because I have a lot on my mind, or is it that I need less? I certainly don’t seem to need less with all the spontaneous naps I take in the living room!

I've read that over the years too. Most specifically in Louis Lamour books. But it doesn't seem to hold with me either. I usually go to bed around 10:00. On My gym days, I get up at 6:00. Other days, 7:00 or later. When I was still gainfully employed, it was 10:00 to 4:30, maybe 6:00 on weekends.

Of course there are nights that I wake up at 3:30 or 4:00 and don't get back to sleep because my mind, (such as it is) won't shut down.

I think I still need the same amount of sleep. I just don't always get it in one continuous piece.

Like this morning. I woke up about 3:15, couldn't get back to sleep. Read for a couple hours, had breakfast. Long about 7:00 I was feeling sleepy so I went back to bed. Slept till 10:00. So I woke up 3 hours early, took a 4 hour break and then slept three more hours. Still got the same amount of sleep.

I told me sleep apnea doctor I had trouble staying awake during the day even though I got 8 hours of sleep. He said you are retired so take that nap if you need it. There isn't anything wrong with it. Your body tells you what it needs. I catch myself drifting off to sleep while using my laptop. Sometimes I just let the nap take over. Haven't had any negative effects from doing it so go for it.
