Trooper Joe Posted Saturday at 07:56 PM Posted Saturday at 07:56 PM This is my first post on this great forum. Really interested in SASS firearms but am a little too old to participate in SASS events (83). I just bought a Uberti made Taylor's & Company C. Mason 1851 Navy Revolver, .38 Special. I also have a 5 year old Uberti made 1851 in .36 cal. After reading about using a Howell conversion cylinder in a .36 cal cap and ball revolver and the fact that the bore size was a little too large for good accuracy with a .38 special round, I was curious whether or not Uberti actually used a correct .38 special bore size in their “Conversion” models. This afternoon, I disassembled both guns and slugged their bores using a .357 Hornady lead ball. It turns out that Uberti did the right thing by using a slightly small bore in their .38 special guns. I had a little trouble measuring them but my results were as follows: Uberti 1851, .36 cal (.379 to .380) Uberti Conversion model (.355 to .356) Also, when I dropped the ball into the forcing cone of each barrel, it dropped in slightly farther into the 1851 than into the conversion . This is interesting since several years a well known US gun maker was reported using .44 Mag barrels (unmodified) in their 44-40 production revolvers. Accuracy was reported as not too good in their 44-40 models. Trooper Joe Quote

Just because you’ve got a little extra mileage on your frame doesn’t make you too old!! Here’s my friend, Blue Boy on his hundredth birthday!! He has since passed on, but he still attended matches until he was 102!! Edited Sunday at 02:18 PM by Blackwater 53393 3 1 Quote
