I was watching a Bonanza episode where the sheriff’s horse had some trouble walking. He checked it and took it into a barn. The horse was limping! How did they get the horse to limp? Did they put something in his hoof? I’ve seen this before and I’m sure all of you have. Any horse people out there?

Probably back in the twenties and thirties they would have put something in his foot. The same way as they made the horses fall down by stretching a rope across the road.

And then when they were forced to quit tripping the horses, they trained them to Fall down on cue. As the Marshal said.

So I'm sure that that horse, in the '60s, would have just been trained to limp and not forced to limp. If they had forced him the humane society would have been all over them.

i think they trained it. A horse will do anything for a little love and a sugar cube or carrot.

Sounds like my girl friend....I mean that is amazing....

In the 60's, they still treated the animals like they did in previous years. In the original 1963 movie Flipper, they had no special effects to simulate spearing a dolphin....so they speared one in the wild and filmed it.

Won't find that in Wiki, but that's what they did. Speared the dolphin, beached it on the rocks and then "rescued' it.

Injuring animals during movie making wasn't new but it started to come with more publicity and therefore more scrutiny from the early 60's onward. I don't ever remember a statement at the end of any pre-1965 movie stating that No animals were harmed during the making of this movie.
