Alpo Posted January 2 Posted January 2 I'm watching Miracle on 34th Street, which, as you know, takes place in New York City in late December. There's snow everywhere, and in the night scenes, there is steam coming up out of the culverts. Why is steam coming out of the sewers in New York City? Realize, that I was raised down south, and we don't have snow and sub-zero winter temperatures. I've never seen steam coming out of the gutters in real life. But I see it frequently in movies that take place in New York City in the winter. It would make sense if they were running hot water in the sewers, but I kind of doubt that. I understand the subways used to be run by steam locomotives, but I don't think they are anymore. Pretty sure they're electric. So why the steam? 1 1 Quote
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted January 3 Posted January 3 (edited) It's warmer in the sewers that at street level. When warm meets cold you get condensation. Like an airplane contrail. Edited January 3 by Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 4 Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted January 3 Posted January 3 When I worked in Hartford, CT, there were steam/cooling pipes running in manholes to various large buildings. Sometimes you'd see steam escaping, but not all the time . I presumed it was the cold and a leak. Sometimes we'd get frost buildup around telephone manholes, but it wasn't like a steam cloud. 1 Quote
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted January 3 Posted January 3 But, what's your question about Yankee land? You asked about subways in New York. Yankee land is New England, of which New York is not a part. I are confused. 1 Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted January 3 Posted January 3 (edited) New York is NOT a part of New England! It is therefore not Yankee! Yankee's are only found in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and the eastern half of Connecticut. (The southwest corner especially has been occupied by foreigners.) Seriously, Yankee = Someone from New England. There are sub definitions, but that's the main one. Yankees put cheddar cheese on apple pie, not ice cream, we drink Moxie, (Well some of us do. It's an acquired taste) are not interested in College Sports, know what the difference is between Jimmies and Sprinkles, are some of the worst drivers in all the universe, are sadly dominated by idiot liberals, have a profound sense of history, sort of, can't stand Starbucks, (Dunkin' Donuts rules) curse the existence of traffic circles, which are called rotaries, not roundabouts, (especially when some moron goes and puts one right off the Battle Green in Lexington) never eat fish west of the Hudson river, have the best pizza in the country, tend to be very full of ourselves and provincial, have the best ballpark in the world, use landmarks like big rocks and Dunkin' Donuts shops when giving directions, and consider at least some of the above to be proper. Oh, and we are very offended by the idea that the New York Highlanders renamed their baseball team the "Yankees" in a clear violation of reality. The lawsuit to get them to stop calling them that is still pending. Seriously, there is something strangely entertaining, and ironic about being in Fenway Park and listening to 35,000 New Englanders shout "YANKEES SUCK!" at the top of their lungs. And we NEVER try to park the car in Harvard Yard. It would get towed. That, and the phrase has become something of a shibboleth. Even locals can't say it without ridiculously overdoing their accent to the point where it sounds faked. Nobody talks like Cliff Claven, nobody talks like Charles Emerson Winchester III, only the Kennedys talk like them, and no one from Hollywood should be allowed to attempt any kind of a New England accent. They will get it wrong. Heck, even Mark Wahlberg's (your cousin, from Boston) accent is wrong. He exaggerates it on purpose in the movies. This post brought to you by someone who knows what it means to be a minority. I am a conservative, prolife, gun owning, Republican, born again Christian, fundamental Baptist. From Massachusetts. It don't get much rarer than that! Edited January 3 by H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 1 Quote

Dapper Dave Posted January 3 Posted January 3 All I can tell you is when I went to Boot Camp at Great Mistakes north of Chicago, I saw steam rising from the manholes, and that was in 85 degree weather in September. I would have asked about it, but the really big guys in the round browns discouraged stupid questions quite thoroughly...never did find out. Quote
watab kid Posted January 3 Posted January 3 youve got the answer - we also get fog off lakes and marshes this time of year - warmer water meeting colder air - sometimes like last week the fog is so thick you cant see more than a few car lengths ahead of you , thats how it was for me last saturday on half my drive to our family christmas gettogether , made slow going that half , made up for it on the second half and was on time , pays to allow a little extra time for unknowns , but thats me - my wife is always late Quote
Ozark Huckleberry Posted January 3 Posted January 3 You've seen the same thing here in FL, just didn't have sidewalks and sewers to cornfuse you. We also get steam coming off of ponds, criks, lakes, and rivers. Generally in the fall/early winter after a cold front has come through. Warm water, cooler air, air temp and dew point close together ='steam (actually, just a small-scale fog). 1 Quote

Matthew Duncan Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Back in the day sanitary sewer and storm water was combined in the same collection system. Poop is warmer and causes stream during cold weather. 1 Quote

Alpo Posted January 3 Author Posted January 3 (edited) Dave's second video makes a lot of sense. Because, while I have seen fog on the lake and on the creeks, it's just sitting there. The movies I'm talking about with New York City - it's coming out like it's being shot out of a cannon. Like you have a squirt gun that is shooting steam instead of water. It appears to be coming up under pressure. It's not drifting up. And fog doesn't drift up anyhow. Fog sits there. The annoying thing about that video is about every 30 seconds it would lock up for two or three minutes before it would start playing again. I made it all the way to 3 minutes and 47 seconds before I gave up and discussed(IN DISGUST). Took me about 20 minutes to watch that 4 minutes of video. Edited January 3 by Alpo Quote

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted January 3 Posted January 3 steam plants are all over the former Soviet Union. One time I visited Simferopol in Crimea, I had an apartment where there were many cats in the area, it was summer. Went back in the winter, no cats. second look, sleeping on top of the asbestos wraps on the steam pipes. Quote
Texas Joker Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I thought referring to them as steam tunnels made it self evident. Those cities have been there for hundreds of years tech may have changed but the infrastructure it was built on is still there mostly 1 Quote
