Alpo Posted January 1 Posted January 1 https://m.youtube.com/shorts/-Ggfvtzl81w Bummer. It won't embed. What it is is a sign that says that everything in the store is marked $951. If you are a paying customer and bring it up to the register you get a discount. Shoplifters, however - whatever they steal cost $951, and apparently the state of California has decided that is the value that something has to be before it becomes Grand theft. So you take a box of cracker jacks off the shelf, Marked $951, and take them up to the register and you get a $950 discount. But if you shoplift that box of cracker jacks, you stole a $951 item and that is Grand theft - a felony 4 Quote

Chantry Posted January 1 Posted January 1 I suspect it won't get past the prosecutor or hold up in court. 4 Quote
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted January 1 Posted January 1 Year or so ago, I read about a punk in Virginia. He ordered a burger and water at a McDonald’s window. Dumped out the water, walked into McD and filled the cup with soda at the machine. He was charged with Grand Larceny. I figure it would be pled down. But seriously Grand Larceny for a couple bucks worth of soda? 1 Quote

It hurts them as well because they have to raise prices to cover the losses from thefts, which hurts business. If they need to make an example of this guy by bringing heftier charges against him, then so be it. 3 Quote
WD Farren Posted January 1 Posted January 1 $951 may be a felony but CA will never enforce it. We are told the thieves “need it” which makes it ok. So businesses close and leave. 1 3 Quote

If real, it is not enforceable. When evaluating a retail loss, the value is what a buyer would pay a seller. In other news, a new California law gives judges the power to charge and try a crime as a misdemeanor instead of a felony. This for crimes which could have more than a year in jail, but could also carry a lesser penalty. Quote
Gateway Kid SASS# 70038 Life Posted January 1 Posted January 1 Just my opinion, but a thief is a thief. If they won’t put them in jail or prison I think it would be appropriate to give them five lashes for 1st offense and another five for every subsequent offense. When we had our business it was operating on a three to four percent profit margin so a $100 ripoff affected us measurably. If someone is supporting or disregarding criminal behavior they are no less a criminal themselves! IMHO Gateway Kid 3 Quote
