Subdeacon Joe Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 I've been seeing commercials for various charities on TV. 5 or 6 of them say, "For only $19 a month!" What the heck is it with $19/month? Is there some mystical quality to that amount?
Doc Shapiro Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 It's less than $20. I strongly suspect that they ran a market survey and at $20, folks balked. But they were willing at $19. Kinda similar how coffee is $4.99 and not an even $5. It's a psyop.

Same marketing firm, I guess.

Same marketing firm, I guess. May years ago, my grandfather owned a liquor store in Georgetown, in DC. He had a buddy that owned a hardware store. His friend dropped all his prices by 1 cent and his sales picked up substantially. There's definitely something psychological about it.

Rye Miles #13621 Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 Tunnels2Towers is the only one that asks for $11.00 a month. I read that 93% goes to the wounded and disabled.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 someday it'll be "Just $49 a month"
Dr. Zook Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 It may be something the way a human brain interprets numbers (price) and how you were taught rounding in math. <=5 round Down/=>6 round Up. Now when my wife wants something (purse, shoes) if the price is $99.99 its only $99 to play mind games.
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 I've seen those commercials since I was a child. They've always been $19 a month.
Cypress Sun Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 I've been seeing the $19 per month ads recently stating "now with 2X (or 3X) the impact. Impact of what?
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 $19 a month equates to roughly 63 CENTS a day. Some of those agencies will say that in their ads. If you notice, the SAME dog (animal) ads have been showing for 3+ years. Some of those animals have probably died by now. I like the part, especially with the life insurance ads, about how AFFORDABLE the cost is set. Well, if all of them are affordable, why don't I have any money to invest in them? ..........Widder

They were showing them back in the 70s. And it was pretty much the same thing as you see now. This might sound Bad, but I always thought that if people didn't "Feed the Children", the population over there might have dropped off naturally to where they didn't have so many starving children.

I remember those, with a non-starving Sally Struthers "pleading" for the children as a spokesperson.

She was just the most recent, (at that time) celebrity to jump on that bandwagon. They'd been doing it years before she got involved. As an aside, it had been years since she'd been on anything at that time. I always wondered if that was her way of trying to regain the spotlight of fame. If so, it didn't seem to work. (The $200 sunglasses she wore kind of spoiled the image).

My first thought when these commercials appeared was the same as that of the late Sam Kennison… MOVE TO WHERE THE FOOD IS!!! It NEVER made sense to me for people to try to live where they couldn’t grow food or earn a living!! Just pack up the family and whatever you have and go somewhere else!!
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 Yepper. I've complained (bitched) about the pricing of Gasoline ever since I started buying the stuff. What's with $3.499?? Or any other amount with that little hiccup "9" tacked on. Legal form of BAIT & SWITCH??. What about now that the Penny is Dodo??

Widder, SASS #59054 Posted December 31, 2025 Posted December 31, 2025 SASS membership is only @ $5 a month. That's just a few pennies a day. And some folks question its validity. ..........Widder

Those are completely different ads from the ones we’re talking about. I remember Feed the Children ads as well but were specifically talking about these $19.00 a month ads which are fairly recent.
