Alpo Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 I also got my first knife for Christmas. 4th grade, so I had just turned nine. Imperial. No idea of the model, but I remember it was a Imperial brand. Carried at least one knife every day since. 2 Quote
Shotgun-Gibbs Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Not having a pocket knife on me feels the same as if I didn't have pants on! Nice gift for him! 4 Quote

Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 My first knife was a Boy Scout Knife given to me for Christmas when I was 10. I wasn't allowed to carry it to school, but if I wasn't AT school, it lived in my pocket. When I hit Jr. High, I started carrying it even at school, and have carried one with me everyday, (except at Marine Corps Boot Camp), ever since. Even today, the multi-blade knife is what I carry. Now it's a Victorinox Tinker. Rule 9: Never go anywhere without a knife. 3 Quote
Laramie Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 I gave all my grandkids a pocket knife on their eighth Christmas wrapped with a couple band aids. None of them ever admitted to using the bandages! Lol 1 Quote
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 (edited) Getting CUT or STUCK can sometimes be the best education for a young feller. It teaches US all that accidents will happen and being careful is Rule #1. Rule #2: teach him how to whittle. Rule #3: teach him how to sharpen it. Rule #4: When teaching him SAFETY, let him know his taking care of that knife might determine when he gets his first BB or pellet rifle..... kinda like an elementary test for future gifts..... P.S. - that is a nice gift. ..........Widder Edited December 26, 2025 by Widder, SASS #59054 4 Quote
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 (edited) My first was a genuine Boy Scout three blade dandy that I got for my tenth birthday. The school principle brought it by the house the next evening and explained that, although I hadn't caused any trouble with it, I was not allowed to bring it to school. When I got to high school most of the guys carried a knife. I had a single edge box cutter and a 6" produce knife (I worked in a grocery store) Today, all those years later, I go nowhere without at least two knives. I leave them in the car when I visit the VA. They explained that no deadly weapons were allowed. I told the lady nurse that both the Army and Marine Corps had turned me into a deadly weapon. She very seriously said "Be careful that you don't cut yourself." She's the same nurse that was checking my records when I first checked in: "You were born in 1942." "Yes Ma'am." "You need to be aware that they don't make parts for that model any more." Nary a trace of a smile. I still love that lady. Edited December 26, 2025 by Forty Rod SASS 3935 2 1 Quote

Injun Ryder, SASS #36201L Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Gave my daughter a Swiss Army Camp knife on Dec 12th when she was eight. We were camping in Death Valley and I told her that Santa Claus had brought her this as an early Christmas present since he knew she was camping. 2 Quote
Stump Water Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 Nice gift. No idea when I got my first knife, but I've carried one every day since I can remember. 2 Quote
Springfield Slim SASS #24733 Posted December 26, 2025 Posted December 26, 2025 I received my first knife when I was 7 years old. A neighbor boy, probably 17 or so, was helping my Dad and I with something, and he asked me to cut something. When I told him I didn't have a knife yet, he gave me his pocket knife, said every boy should carry one. He said he had lots more at home. Had one(or 2 or 3) on me ever since. Later the Cub Scouts, and my father, taught me the proper way to sharpen them. 2 Quote

Pat Riot Posted December 27, 2025 Posted December 27, 2025 That’s a beauty of a knife, @Highwall My first knife was a camping knife with a folded out fork and spoon. I do not recall the maker. I was 8 years old. I have carried at least one knife on me ever since. When my daughter turned 8 I gave her a Victorinox “Tinker”. 1 Quote
Coyote Kid, SASS#54714 Posted December 27, 2025 Posted December 27, 2025 I gave my son and later my 4 grandsons a Schrade LB7 when they turned of age to hunt legally (14). I am never without a pocketknife. OK, the sheriff asked to hold it for me while I was at the courthouse for jury duty, But, he gave it back when I left lol Coyote Kid 1 Quote
