And this has what to do with SASS?  I have the greatest respect for WWII fighters, but this seems far, far off topic.

This is the Saloon not the wire. Off topic is the norm. Far far off topic is expected.

AC and ice cream were great for the crews. If only the blasted Mk. 13 (or whatever the number was) torpedoes would have worked until late 1943 or 44, it might have saved a bunch of U.S. submariners!  Stupid BuOrd chairwarmers "knew" it wasn't the fault of their untested torps. Had to be the fault of the sub skippers and crews!

my only exposure to submarines was thru m FIL who was on the first crew of the nautilus , he never said much of the conditioning but since he did three tours in VN - admittedly one was the coral sea [river boats ] i would have expected to hear if the conditions were unbearable , we talked a lot he never complained

I've been aboard the USS Nautilus and several WWII fleet submarines.  The USS Nautilus is bigger and much nicer than the WWII fleet boats.

I'll mention that the WWII Fleet boats were bigger and nicer than many of their contemporaries.

This is the SALOON, Rip.  We can discuss whatever we want here and you can't do much of anything about it.  Nanner, nanner nanner!

i expected that , my FIL service started in the early 50s so he did not have WWII experiences , somewhere herei have a list of the boats he served on the gray back was one , i need to go thru all his stuff , its all in my office here at the house , i just havent had time to dig into it yet , there is a lot - he was a navy lifer [mustang officer] that had aother  career after that as a professor at the local university in geography . he also did a lot of volunteer work for a major foundation here ,
