Rip Snorter Posted December 22, 2025 Posted December 22, 2025 And this has what to do with SASS? I have the greatest respect for WWII fighters, but this seems far, far off topic. 3 Quote

Trailrider #896 Posted December 22, 2025 Posted December 22, 2025 AC and ice cream were great for the crews. If only the blasted Mk. 13 (or whatever the number was) torpedoes would have worked until late 1943 or 44, it might have saved a bunch of U.S. submariners! Stupid BuOrd chairwarmers "knew" it wasn't the fault of their untested torps. Had to be the fault of the sub skippers and crews! 4 1 Quote
watab kid Posted December 22, 2025 Posted December 22, 2025 my only exposure to submarines was thru m FIL who was on the first crew of the nautilus , he never said much of the conditioning but since he did three tours in VN - admittedly one was the coral sea [river boats ] i would have expected to hear if the conditions were unbearable , we talked a lot he never complained Quote

The USS Nautilus is bigger and much nicer than the WWII fleet boats. I'll mention that the WWII Fleet boats were bigger and nicer than many of their contemporaries. 1 Quote

Crooked River Pete, SASS 43485 Posted December 23, 2025 Posted December 23, 2025 I read a book about WWII subs that was written during the war. The author stated the air was not for sailor comfort. Before air was installed condensation dripped down on many electrical systems and caused shorts, that was the reason for air. 3 Quote
