I'm watching The Longest Yard. The snitch has booby trapped Burt Reynolds cell. Using a hypodermic syringe he inserted something into the light bulb - I presume it to be gasoline - and screwed it back into the socket and when they turn the light on it exploded into flame.

You suppose that would work?

I think it would probably work, but I doubt the result would be fatal like it was to Caretaker.

In my best guess - It would be almost impossible for someone with a hypodermic needle to pierce an incandescent bulb to fill it with a flammable liquid without the inert gases within the bulb getting out. The lack of the inert gases would probably aid in the ignition of the flammable liquid and the resulting detonation of the fluid would probably blow the bulb up.

A syringe cannot penetrate a light bulb. The bulb is sealed a glass enclosure. There is no place that even an ultra thin needle can penetrate. The metal leads that connect the base to the filament(s) inside are fused to the glass enclosure during manufacture.

To inject anything into the glass enclosure you would first have to drill a hole in the glass.  Only then could you fill the glass with a liquid.

Apparently the gasoline vapors will displace the oxygen in the enclosure keeping the bulb from exploding.

ive always known that you cant set fire to liquid gasoline but if you provide air annd let it vapor you can get the explosive results , just not like the movies but hey its hollywood - much like the molitov cocktail the wick wont do anything but burn till you le the fumes build or burst the container so the fumes can ignite

if someone approaches you with one - shoot the container before they throw it , it will be their bad day instead of yours
