Over the last few months, we’ve been focused on identifying the next solutions in our fight to end gun violence in our communities.

This past fall, we attended a policy summit with advocates, elected officials and stakeholders to discuss many initiatives to further strengthen Illinois gun safety laws.

Several legislative measures included in that discussion are detailed below – and we’re asking you today for your feedback on what matters most when it comes to keeping our families, friends and loved ones safe from gun violence.

Can you take a moment today to let us know what matters most to you? Your valuable feedback will help us as we prepare to advance more gun safety measures in Springfield in 2026.

Responsible Gun Manufacturing Act

Would require gun manufacturers to change the way they design weapons to prevent the use of switches that can transform a gun into an automatic weapon.

Firearm Restraining Orders

Would strengthen the process of prohibiting a person from buying or owning a gun if they are unfit to do so by expanding the ability of medical and mental health professionals treating a person to weigh in on the court’s decision.

FOID and Mental Health Exams and Evaluations

Would strengthen the process of revoking and restoring FOID card status when a mental health exam is involved.

State Firearm Procurement

Would ensure that firearms used by Illinois law enforcement are purchased from gun manufacturers that are prioritizing responsible business practices and not detracting from the safety of Illinois communities.

Community Violence Intervention Funding

Would provide adequate funding in the face of federal cuts for these critical frontline organizations that are working to stop violence before it starts.

Firearm Risk Education

Would increase funding for education in communities around Illinois about the dangers of gun use and ownership in our homes that is backed by research showing increased awareness of these risks leads to a shift in thinking, reduced violence and lives saved.

Responsibility in Firearms Legislation (RIFL) Act

Would hold gun manufacturers responsible for the damage their weapons cause by instituting licensing fees on a sliding scale that are levied if their product is used to inflict injury. The fees would cover costs associated with gun violence, including medical care, mental health services, trauma support, and other costs stemming from incidents of gun violence.

Firearm & Ammunition Tax

Would create an excise tax on sales of firearms and ammunition in Illinois to fund community violence prevention and public safety organizations.

Gun Safety Law Implementation & Enforcement

Would ensure the critical work to properly implement and vigorously enforce the gun safety laws we have worked to pass is carried out. This work would include the recently enacted Karina’s Law to remove firearms from known domestic abusers in the face of data that shows while crime and violence overall is decreasing, incidents of domestic violence against women are on the rise.

As we prepare for next year’s legislative session, your voice is critical in our effort to continue passing meaningful reform and maintaining the significant progress that we have achieved in our fight to protect Illinois communities from gun violence.

Thank you for your time in sharing your feedback. We’re grateful to have you in the fight!

With Appreciation,

So did I. I was hoping for a comment box to ask about criminal violence which is way worse than gun violence. None of my guns has done anything violent, they just lay, stand, it sit there! A mandatory jail sentence for crimes with guns involved would be a starting step.
