The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: Most of y'all have seen the old Dr. Pepper advertisements advising the consumer to drink Dr. Pepper at 10, 2, and 4. The slogan was used in the 1920s, 30s and 40s and was based on a 1920s study that found people's blood sugar levels dropped at 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Every time I see one of these old advertisements I think "that seems to be an excessive amount of sugar, doesn't it?" But one simple fact has eluded me up until this very morning: a standard Dr. Pepper bottle in the 1920s was 6.0 ounces, increasing to 6.5 in the last years of the decade. It wasn't until the 1940s that Dr. Pepper bottles started increasing in size. So that's 18 oz. of soda spread out over six hours or whatever. That makes quite a big difference! I don't know why I didn't put 2 and 2 together and realize it until I was just handling a vintage Dr. Pepper bottle just now. DOH!

Show here: the restored Dr. Pepper sign in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.

I remember that slogan, but...

I was thinking you were proposing a SASS stage and I was trying to decide if it was 10 pistol, 2 Rifle and 4 Shotgun or 10 Pistol, 4 Rifle, and 2 Shotgun, or.....:P

I read somewhere that the original Dr. Pepper contained prune juice and that’s why it was good for you at 10, 2 & 4.

The flavor was derived from the prune juice as well.

That you read it is true. That it is true is false.

A delivery driver for a competitor started this rumor in the 1930s to discourage sales of Dr. Pepper in favor of his own employer.

Thank you for straightening me out on this issue.
I decided to ask DDG AI and got a lot more than I expected.

Check this out (screen shots I merged)

How do you know what time I get up to pee at night?        GW

That's interesting.  I never fact checked it, but I was told it was because, in the 20's these were the break times for the working class. The low blood sugar reason seems more logical because Dr. Pepper is reported to have been developed for medical reasons, by a doctor.
