I was in marching band, not a rock band. I played woodwind, not percussion.

So I got no idea what a bass drum porthole is.

Apparently it's a hole in the head of the drum, but why?

It lets the sound out. Rock bands are loud so drummers need to project the bass drum as well as mike it. I played drums in bands for 40 years, I still play but just for myself. Here’s my set. I also have a pillow inside to deaden the boom of the drum. It gives It more of a thud. Notice the hole?
