Alpo Posted November 27, 2025 Posted November 27, 2025 I was reading about nutmeg yesterday. The article said that groundnut Meg loses --- groundnut Meg? Really? Damn otto --- ground nutmeg loses its potency after about 6 months. But the nut - actually a seed - never goes bad. It said that if you needed a bunch - like a quarter teaspoon for this recipe or a half teaspoon for that recipe, grating the nut is going to take you forever. So go ahead and buy the ground stuff. But if all you want is to put a little sprinkle on your cocoa or something, get a nut. So I thought I might give this a try. I have known OF nutmeg for decades, but I've never used it. I start doing some internet shopping. Hey, how about that. Amazon sells nutmegs. Anywhere from a container of four to a container of 20. Well since I have gone 70 years without using it I suspect I won't use a lot of it if I do start using it. I would not use four. I most certainly would not use 20. So I started wondering if there was some place where I could get one (One is the loneliest number that you ever knew - get away from me three dog night, it ain't that cold yet). 1 1 Quote

Cypress Sun Posted November 27, 2025 Posted November 27, 2025 A 1/4 teaspoon of fresh, ground nutmeg is a lot of nutmeg. Probably would overpower the recipe. I've never seen unground nutmeg for sale. Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted November 27, 2025 Posted November 27, 2025 Whole nutmeg is wonderful stuff. If you have a good microplane it doesn't take long to grate half teaspoon or more. Expand your horizons. Nutmeg goes well with pork, chicken, potatoes, green beans, among other things. 2 Quote
Sedalia Dave Posted November 27, 2025 Posted November 27, 2025 My local grocery store carries both whole and ground nutmeg. The whole nutmeg is sold in little jars just like the ground. BTW You cannot buy it from Wally world but you can buy from Amazon Quote

Subdeacon Joe Posted November 27, 2025 Posted November 27, 2025 (edited) Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit! You can buy just one! https://highplainsspicecompany.com/shop/nutmeg-whole/ But with shipping (this is to California, I don't know your zipcode) you might as well go to a store and buy a small bag or jar. Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted November 28, 2025 Posted November 28, 2025 now you need a microplaner or something like it. Quote
Alpo Posted November 28, 2025 Author Posted November 28, 2025 Yeah I was just looking for that. I heard microplane so I did a search on "microplane" and dozens of them showed up. And they all said they were citrus zesters and cheese graters. None of them said anything about nutmeg. So on a hunch I tried a search on "nutmeg grater". Again I got dozens of them. None of them look anything like the microplanes, but they all said they were for grating nutmeg. Quote
Alpo Posted November 28, 2025 Author Posted November 28, 2025 This is from a webcomic about a dozen years ago. Jamie made this neat little dessert. Ellen liked it. Jamie and Max went to the store and when they returned Why Jamie called Poison control. I did not know this about nutmeg, prior to reading this comic. 1 Quote

Subdeacon Joe Posted November 28, 2025 Posted November 28, 2025 I tried one of the nutmeg graters. Microplane works much better. Quote
Alpo Posted November 28, 2025 Author Posted November 28, 2025 Quite true, quite true. I have used things in ways that they were not designed for often through my life. But if I'm looking for something, and I really don't know what it looks like so all I can go by is what I've heard it's called, it would really help if in the description they said it would work for what I wanted to use it for. Alpo Posted November 28, 2025 Author Posted November 28, 2025 So any of these things Would work? Quote

I had to read that a couple of times. I thought it said that the top held partially grated nutmeg (not A partially grated nutmeg, just partially grated nutmeg - what a difference an article makes), and I was thinking - you grated more than you needed so the leftover gets set up there until you need some the next time? So the second time I read that it clicked - that's where you put the nut so you can find it the next time. 4 Quote
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted November 28, 2025 Posted November 28, 2025 My Filipino helper saw my 16 oz bottle of nutmeg and asked what it was. Turns out she is very familiar with the fruit since it comes from the South Pacific (Indonesia) and is used for jams and jellies. 1 Quote

That's the type I tried, and what I used at reenactments. Those are the type that are almost worthless. What i call a "nail punch" type because it looks like you punched it with a nail. I have a box grater that has a side that's close to a microplane instead of the usual nail-punch. 1 Quote

Alpo Posted November 28, 2025 Author Posted November 28, 2025 Think of it like whiskey. You drink a shot of whiskey and you get a warm feeling spread all through your body. You get a half gallon bottle of whiskey and you chuggalug it and you're going to die. 2 Quote

I don't know of many receipts for cookies or cakes that call for more than 1 tsp of ground nutmeg. So, one cookie from a batch that makes 3 dozen isn't likely to be an issue. 3 or 4 might be enough to give it an upset stomach or diarrhea. 1 Quote
