Do you suppose it was a revolver or BS by the reporter?

Television and movies to the contrary, if you heat up a fully loaded automatic pistol until it gets to the point that the powder will go off, you will have one shot - where the cartridge in the chamber explodes and sends the bullet down the barrel - and a whole bunch of little poppies where the cartridge is in the magazine expand and rupture. So --- no multiple shots.

A revolver, on the other hand, has all the shells in the chambers, and since the revolver has five or six or seven or eight or ten chambers there can be multiple shots.

But what gang banger thug uses a revolver these days?

I suspect journalistic BS. Makes the story sound more impressive.

Not only that but plastic handguns would melt before a round cooked off.  Regardless, none of the rounds would go off in quick succession as if the gun were actually being fired normally. I also call BS

In RED, Bruce Willis threw a handful of cartridges in the frying pan and had the burner turned on high. When it got hot enough they went off - POW POW POW POW POW POW - but no bullets went flying around. There was just the sounds of the gunpowder going off and rupturing the cases. Which drew all the bad guys' attention to the kitchen, and allowed him to kill a few of them.

Since it is a public release by a police department, I'm going to say it is not a reporter's tale.
