It’s a funny feel good movie. Me? I can take it or leave it, but my family really likes Elf

My favorite Christmas movie is “A Christmas Story”.

We are actually going to the house that was used in the filming of the movie this Christmas week if weather permits.

Christmas is 35 days away, 34 days for @Wallaby Jack, SASS #44062 :D

Same as above!!  Will Farrell is about as funny as a root canal without anesthesia!!

I really like the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street with Maureen O’Hara, White Christmas, (every three or four years) The Grinch, (also every few years) The Three Godfathers, and Bruce is right!!

Nope...it's a Hanukkah movie:

"Into this world comes our hero, everyman John McClane; and into the parellel story, comes everyman Judas Maccabeus. (Actually, first his father Mattathias comes in, but more on that in a moment.)

Judas Maccabeus will be the man who leads the revolt against the Seleucid Greeks which ultimately drives them out of Judea. But Judas is not only fighting a battle against an occupying empire; he is also fighting to restore the Jewish people to faithfulness.

In the film, John McClane is dealing with broken faith in his marriage. His wife, now going by her maiden name Holly Gennero, represents the Hellenized Jews. She has "gone astray" and taken up with a foreign power, the Nakatomi Corporation, which has even "wedded" her via a gift of jewelry (the Rolex watch). Holly attempts to justify all this as a mere professional necessity, but even she seems to know how weak an excuse it is, even if John is far from perfect himself."

An outnumbered force with limited resources reclaims a tower that was taken by a foreign invader.

That's literally Hanukkah.

Christmas movies I like:

The Bishop's Wife

Miracle on 34th Street  (original)

A Christmas Carol- favorite version is a toss up between the George C. Scott version and the Patrick Stewart version. If my life depended on picking one,  I guess the Scott version would take it by 0.01 seconds.   Running close are the 1938 Reginald Owen and the 1951 Alaster Sim versions.

The Shop Around the Corner, 1940

Meet Me in St. Louis, 1944

The Lion in Winter, 1968

Not a movie, but A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Even though the stories have happy endings, I’ve never been fond of movies & shows where deceit between characters is a central element. “White Christmas” and “Christmas in Connecticut” are two such movies I won’t watch again.

On the other hand, my Christmas favorites are, in no particular order:

* Miracle on 34th Street (Maureen O’Hara)

* A Christmas Carol (G. C. Scott)

* Nat’l Lampoon Christmas Vacation

* Home Alone (the first one, not the sequels)

* The Santa Clause (the first one, not the sequels)

* A Christmas Story (the first one, not the sequel)

I know I’m supposed to like “It’s a Wonderful Life”, but so much of the movie is a downer I have a hard time sitting through to the end. (And I’ve even known Karolyn Grimes (Zu Zu) personally.)

Other favorites are a variety of MGM and Warner Bros. cartoons from the 40’s & early 50’s.

Those I've never warmed up to. I don't like any of the National Lampoon movies. "The Santa Clause" I can tolerate.

Which is weird,  because I like Monty Python,  Benny Hill, and most Mel Brooks stuff.

It is not Christmas till Hans goes off the Nakatomi Plaza! Other than that, It's a Wonderful Life when the tree gets decorated, and  The 1938 Christmas Carol. Off topic, music.  Bing Crosby Christmas, and the Tractors Christmas - can't say which drives the adult kids crazier!

I’ll get my first dose of Christmas entertainment in about two weeks!!

My youngest grandson is playing E. Scrooge esq. for the high school drama class’s fall production. He has two hundred seventy lines in the show! A Christmas Carol will be a landmark in our family!

I’m hoping that it will be a great one! Three shows in two days! I can hardly wait!

White Christmas isn't so much about Christmas as about two veterans who try to help their old CO. The first time I saw it was with my Grandfather, around 1950 or so.  "We'll Follow the Old Man" is a great song. Just MHO.

I like ELF, although I ain't a WF fan.

My favs are:  Miracle on 34th street (I like em both, but the original one is my fav)

White Christmas ( just like the song)

A Christmas Story (really like the WHOLE movie).  The scenes shown in the windows of all the toys remind me of my childhood days in

downtown Knoxville.  The stores really did it right back in the 50's and 60's).

I like Its a Wonderful Life, but it does kinda drag on and on and I have a hard time watching the whole thing.

Natl Lapoon's CHRISTMAS is always fun to watch.   Chevy's character and adorning his house with lights remind me of meowndangself.

I love lots of lights at CHRISTMAS.

I love about ALL the Christmas music, those about Christ and those that are just seasonal.     I do hate 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer'.

..........Widder

I like Elf. Not because of Buddy. In spite of Buddy. I like Zoe what's her name - Bones' little sister - and I like Jimmy Caan. They make the movie. And I really love her singing in the shower. Don't know if that's her or if she's been dubbed, but that is the best scene in the movie.

Kurt Russell's Christmas Chronicles and Christmas Chronicles 2 are good.

Can't forget Trading Places

Prancer.  Perhaps a little mushy, but... Sam Elliott, Cloris Leachman, Abe Vigoda.  Nuff said.

Over the weekend we watched Fatman with Mel Gibson (2020).  I recommend.  Not sure how I missed it until now.

Elf?  No.  Can... not...STAND Will Ferrell.   That said, albeit not Christmas movies, Daddy's Home, also starring Mark Wahlberg, is watchable.  And Daddy's Home 2, which adds Mel Gibson and John Lithgow to the cast, is even more watchable.  Recommend watching them back-to-back, or at least on consecutive nights.

If Depp is starring in it it's sure to be a stinker.

And let's not forget "Lethal Weapon".

If “Lethal Weapon” qualifies as a Christmas movie, so does “LA Confidential”. (An excellent film, BTW). 😊

I like Johnny Depp as an actor. He was excellent as John Dillinger in “Public Enemies”.

No, Will Ferrell is not funny. Not even in Talladega Nights. Elf was a horrible movie.

Never thought of Trading Places as a Christmas movie but I do like the movie, especially Jamie Lee Curtis.

For me the don't miss Christmas movies are...

1 - The Christmas Story

2 - Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

3 - The Grinch That Stole Christmas (original animated version)

4 - A Charlie Brown Chrismas

5 - Almost any movie about the Battle of the Bulge

"Lethal Weapons' was done at Christmas, so as far as I'm concerned, (YMMV), it's a Christmas movie. I've never seen “LA Confidential”, so I'll take your word for it. B)

I'll not comment on Depp as an actor, but the things I've seen him in, I just don't like. Maybe I just don't like what he's done.  <_<

I also liked Patrick Stewart's version of Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol".

Can't stand Will Farrell.
