H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted November 17, 2025 Posted November 17, 2025 So, what is different about these from a regular Lightning? Quote
Roger Rapid Posted November 17, 2025 Author Posted November 17, 2025 Hi H.K. ... The major change you can see from the outside is that Pedersoli's new Silver Spur features swinging side guides - the previous version had fixed side guides held in place with two screws. The guides swing out as the cartridge is brought up on the lifter and they snap shut to trap and cradle the cartridge between the side guides and the lifter when the bolt is all the way back. They swing out again when the bolt is closed. This is intended to prevent stove-piping and feeding problems. Pedersoli borrowed the design of the swinging side guides from the original large frame Colt Lightning. (Colt produced Lightnings in three frame sizes. The medium frame is what we are familiar with now in the various versions from Uberti, AWA, USFA, Taurus, and the previous "classic" Pedersoli lightning. Each frame size was designed for the relative cartridge sizes - for example, the medium frame Lightning we all know was first designed for .44-40, .38-40, and .32-20.) I had a chance to operate the Silver Spur at last year's ShotShow, and I did not notice any added resistance or extra effort needed to cycle the rifle. It operated easily and smoothly. Actually, when I first cycled it, I didn't notice the side guides flipping out and back. because they moved so quickly. It looked like the lifter was redesigned, too. Not sure what else was changed on the internal parts. Can't wait to get my hands on one and take a peek inside. RR 3 Quote
Texas Jack Black Posted November 17, 2025 Posted November 17, 2025 $2000 OUCH! a lot of cash for this. Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted November 17, 2025 Posted November 17, 2025 Ah yes, just like a large frame Lightning. I remember the first time I cycled my large frame and saw the things swing out, I thought it was weird. Other than the swinging part, at least on Colt Originals, I've been told by Lassiter that the only difference between the large and medium frames is size. His exact words were that the large frames were a Lightning "on steroids." The small frames are completely different, having more in common with a Winchester 73 than the medium frame Lightnings. At least, that's what it looked like to me. Lassiter more or less knew why I made the comparison and agreed with me. (If I recall our conversation correctly.) I do know that my AWA .45 Colt Lightning can run .45 Schofields with no problem. I wonder of they will cause problems with trying to run the shorter round in the Pedersoli. (I need to double check something on the large frame...) $2000 is a bit steep, but perhaps worth it. I wonder what other calibers it will be available in. I'd be interested in .44 Magnum. I don't like the config of their "modernized" Lightning in that caliber, but one of these would be something I'd strongly consider acquiring. You can never have too many Lightnings. Adding a .44 Magnum to my collection would be most welcome. Quote

It is likely that the end user will be able to buy it for less. Outside of a Taurus, most used lightnings in good condition and that actually run well will cost around $2k; 45 Colt a little less and .357 a little more. That just seems to be the market right now. Heck, a used, tuned, and good condition 73 isn't too far away from that amount. 1 Quote
watab kid Posted November 19, 2025 Posted November 19, 2025 most everything ive looked at it the last couple years was 1500-1800 thats not really all that much more , but yes when you already have multiple rifles to choose from it might give you pause ................unless , its exactly what you have always wanted to use , ive been on pause because i just want one , it will probably see little real life use and as my wife would put it i really dont need it , 1 Quote
Three Foot Johnson Posted November 20, 2025 Posted November 20, 2025 If these work well, I'd be interested in .44-40 or, even better, .38-40, but have -0- interest in one in .45 Colt. I wonder if they have a suggestion box on their Website... 3 Quote

I’ve got a couple of Pedersoli Lightnings in 44-40 and one that I converted to 38-40 but I use a couple of pairs of Old Armies with Kirst conversion cylinders that I run Cowboy.45 Special in so I’m interested in the new one because I’ve heard on good authority that it runs well with this cartridge. Windy City Kid Posted November 20, 2025 Posted November 20, 2025 $2,000 is too steep (saying knowing I’ll probably buy one anyway) Quote
watab kid Posted November 20, 2025 Posted November 20, 2025 im good with the 45colt , but id prefer the 38spcl because i need a second in that caliber Quote

Roger Rapid Posted November 24, 2025 Author Posted November 24, 2025 Just remembered one more thing to H.K. Uriah's early question about "what's different?" The new Silver Spur Lightning has a larger loading gate to facilitate loading rounds into the gate and pushing them in with your thumb. RR 1 Quote

I know that loading both an AWA and a Colt can be a tedious process! Quote

Giuseppe Calderoni Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Here is the latest update on dates that I have received. " We apologize for being late answering you; we returned to work yesterday after the Christmas holidays. Unfortunately, we are having production delays. The Silver Spur model will be available between May and July, barring any unforeseen circumstances. We apologize for the inconvenience. Best regards," 1 1 Quote
watab kid Posted January 9 Posted January 9 thats disapointing but id rather they work out any issues before releasing them - fewer returns and complaints , 1 Quote
Hashknife Cowboy Posted January 9 Posted January 9 This is a want item not necessarily a need item. For those of us that have historically gone down the pump rifle rabbit hole, $2K is reasonable if there is no smithing needed. I know what I spent to get a Taurus and Uberti running and I am rather embarrassed as to what that actually cost me to get the rifle to work at least most of the time. I'm interested but not committed yet. Quote
Roger Rapid Posted January 9 Author Posted January 9 Giuseppe Calderoni and Hashknife Cowboy... Based on a communication I had with Stefano Pedersoli about a month ago, shipping of the new Silver Spur was to begin about now. I'm going to the Shot Show in two weeks and will have a clear update of shipping dates after that meeting. Watab Kid... This new Lightning is very different from previous versions and I totally agree that they need to have the bugs worked out first!! I'll report back after the Shot Show. RR 2 5 Quote

Roger Rapid Posted January 27 Author Posted January 27 As promised, I met with Stefano Pedersoli at the Shot Show (Las Vegas, Jan 20-23) regarding production and shipping of the Silver Spur Lightning rifle. Here is what he told us: • The Silver Spur followed the market introduction of the Jackal44 (see photo below) which represents a modern, hunting-oriented version of the Silver Spur and utilizes the same basic mechanism as the Silver Spur. • Although the Silver Spur and the Jackal44 were announced at the 2025 Shot Show, production of the Jackal44 came first and followed several months after the Shot Show. Given the mechanical complexity of the Jackal44, and to be sure it was perfect, we decided to complete the first production batch and subject it to an extensive and rigerous testing cycle before proceeding wth the Silver Spur. • Production of the Silver Spur was delayed because of some modifications that were needed as a result of some fast-cycling cowboy shooting tests. However, I am happy to say the Silver Spur Lightning rifles are now in production in .45LC. • The Silver Spur and Jackal44 rifles are our most difficult rifles to assemble and unfortunately the assembly and fitting is a slow and time-consuming process. • As soon as the first batch is finished, the rifles must sent to the National Proof House for proof testing (100% of the guns we make are required by law for a live-fire proof test). When they come back from proofing they will packaged and shipped to our U.S. distributors. My guess is that these rifles will be in the U.S. in the spring. • I hope that the .357 versions can be shipped later in 2026. Our dealers are taking orders for the Silver Spur now. ==== That is pretty much word-for-word of what Stefano told us. Photo below is me on the left with a new Silver Spur, Stefano Pedersoli in the middle, and my cowboy shooting friend Trapper McDaniels on right. The upper rifle in the picture on the back wall is the new Jackal44. It is a pump-action rifle in .44 Magnum that utilizes the mechanical features of the Silver Spur including the swing-out cartridge guides. (The design of the swinging side guides comes from the original large-frame Colt Lightning.) RR 8 Quote

Roscoe Regulator Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I don't think 24" would be particularly intended for CAS use. My Uberti is 20" and holds 10. Quote
Sedalia Dave Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Impressive that they are having CAS shooters test the function of the action. Hopefully they'll come out with a 44 WCF version. Quote
