After today, 11,12,2025, the US Mint will no longer be minting the penny with has been minted since 1792. Many stores around here have been rounding up or down for the last month or so. It really is past time but I'll miss them for nostalgia reasons I guess. Story below.

A monetary policy that doesn’t have a ONE? That doesn’t make sense to me!

Yea good for them I just don’t get it! If the problem is it costs too much to make them figure out a way to make it cheaper.

Is the nickel next?

As of 2024, it costs the U.S. Mint about 10 to 11 cents to make a single nickel — roughly twice its face value (5¢).

Nope I got a machine that automatically dispenses the coins in the proper plastic sleeves for quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies. It makes it east to roll them up. I’ve had a whole coffee can of pennies that I rolled up a few years

Thus, this date (11-12-2025) will be a great trivia question in the future.

Part of me fears movement to a cashless society. I rarely carry actual bills or coins for pure convenience, but
When it’s all gone and replaced with digital currency, it would be much easier to control people.

The problem I see with their cipherin' is that they are using the production cost as a reason to remove the penny from circulation. If they used the amortized cost (how long a penny can be used) it would be a different story. A penny made 1, 2 ,3+ decades ago can still be used. A coin typically does not go bad. What has happened to the many billions (yes, with a "B") of pennies that have been produced?

I thought the mint’s move to make Pennie’s out of copper cladded zinc years ago reduced the costs of making pennies. I guess that didn’t help.

Is the cost of producing pennies due to the value of the metal? What if they made them out of aluminum? I wish I still had some of the 1943 steel pennies.

I have been noticing that many of the stores have been adjusting prices so that, including the local sales tax, everything ends up being rounded to the nearest $0.05.  There may be an adjustment somewhere in the register software algorithm that is adjusting that when it runs the total, I haven't bothered to look, and CASH is almost never used by folks anymore.  I purchased something at the hardware store just this past week and the total after everything was $3.24.  I put three $1.00 bills, two dimes, and a nickle on the counter and the young girl behind the counter looked at me like I had three heads.  I told her that change was one penny and that if she didn't have any, it would be OK.  I thought she was going to stroke out until the manager walked over, took care of the problem, and walked away shaking his head.

I seem to remember that there was a time a couple decades ago when the stores wouldn't even let you use a charge card for amounts less that $10.00, now it's all they want.  My have times changed...

First place I've seen that rounded to the nearest 5¢ was a KFC, and the sign said it would be rounded down.  Pay with card you're charged the exact amount.

Unless it's a national/regional chain, most places are now passing on the "discount rate" that they are charged for accepting cards, so we've started paying cash more often.

In other news...  If approved by a court, a proposed settlement from Visa and Mastercard would, among other things, allow merchants to decline specific kinds of cards at checkout.

‘We Take Visa, Just Not That One’

Can you imagine what a cluster that's going to be?

Of course it's good news for those that develop & sell point-of-sale systems.

Excepting the "tax" portion of a transaction, the penny has actually been useless for DECADES.  Will NOT be missed (by Me at least).

Yer right, ever since fuses panels were replaced with breaker type panels. The zinc alloy pennies wouldn't be able to take the amps anyway.

When I was a kid, I always liked looking thru the change for Indian head pennies. As a teen, looked for wheats and steels. As an adult, still looked for all three but after a while, they were all gone.

Me, I'll miss the penny. I always, clandestine like, counted my change when the cashier gave it to me. Showed me how smart the employee was and kept cashiers honest.

Here in Canada, minting the penny was discontinued in late 2012 or early 2013, if memory serves.

Bills are rounded up or down depending on total.

Credit card purchases are still debited to the penny, but payment of credit card bill reflects the practice of rounding, unless it's a pre-authorized or bank transfer.

Talk is going around about discontinuing the the 5 cent piece.

We use 1 dollar coins (a Loonie) and 2 dollar coins (a Toonie) now, rather than paper bills.
