That's something that's always sort of tickled me.

The Newnited States gubmint has decided that a pistol is one of them semiautomatic doobers, and that thing with the turny cylinder is not a pistol but is a revolver.

And the people that get all upset about crap like that will be so happy to show you that the government says that that's not a pistol it's a revolver. The fact that the government uses those terms justifies their belief.

But if you point out to them that the same Newnited States gubmint calls that sound modulating device a silencer, not a suppressor --- they will tell you that the government is wrong.

not sure who in gov decided to define or why , if it was the services id see it as they need to differentiate in the supply chain , if it was the ATF i can understand that as well but if it was just some clerk somewhere with nothing to do but write up definitions im suspecting DEI

Yes I do.

Thank you.

I hold much more respect for someone who simply admits to being willfully contrary.

Poking someone in the eye (figuratively) for being overly pedantic is fine - I am obviously not above a spirited debate.

But unless you've joined the Amish - the world did not stop moving forward 150 years ago.

Women can vote now.

Children attend integrated schools.

Pluto is no longer a planet.

Germany and Japan were our enemies.

The Soviet Union was our ally

Arguing that we are obliged to continue honoring the terms or conditions that were used/ believed 100+ years ago - regardless of their use, accuracy or appropriateness today is more than contrary - it is being willfully obtuse.

People call these “drills”!

IMG_1025.jpegWhat it is, actually, is a “DRILL MOTOR” !!

DRILL is actually one of these!

IMG_1026.webp
People call this a drill bit, but it isn’t! That is a misnomer! It is properly called a DRILL!

These are “BITS”!

IMG_1027.jpeg

They’re used to make holes in wood…

All of this to say that referring to a particular item with a familiar, but not necessarily correct name is practically the rule of the day!

My shop teacher would fail you for the day if you used the wrong terminology in referring to one of these items!

Nonetheless, we all know, (generally) what one is referring to, even when the wrong word is used!

But everything else aside, it is a DRILL !
It is NOT a BIT!

It is also not a DRILL MOTOR!

The point is, if you’re communicating an idea, vague references can sometimes be used, but can also be easily misunderstood!

All the things that I illustrated are used to bore, (drill) holes! You can also include the “brace”, a tool used to drive drills and bits before drill motors were invented.

IMG_1028.webp

So when referring to HANDGUNS , the term PISTOL has been used in blanket fashion, across multiple languages, for centuries!

REVOLVER was a new term added when cylinders were incorporated into the pistol to make it a repeating handgun!

The advent of the SEMIAUTOMATIC handgun made for another class of weapon. Still a handgun and also a repeating handgun, but still referred to as a PISTOL!

Somewhere along the line, someone decided that they needed to differentiate between a muzzle loaded single shot handgun, a revolving repeating handgun, and a semiautomatic repeating handgun and unilaterally decided that “PISTOL” should only refer to semiautomatic handguns.  Not everyone agreed, nor was it cast in stone!

GIVE IT A REST!! 🤣

PEDANTIC describes someone who is excessively concerned with minor details and rules, often to the point of being annoying. A pedantic person focuses too much on formalisms or ostentatiously displays their learning, making it seem like they are constantly correcting others or being overly academic.

Pistol, rifle, shotgun! Works for me!  If I need to be more specific, I’ll add extra descriptives!

HEY!!  BLACKWATER!!

How's about a "TABLE SAW??"  I'm Journeyman Cabinet maker and I've never actually seen a "Table" saw.  I've seen lots of circular saws mounted through a table though.  And, I'm just too lazy today to look up and attach pictures.  Burma Shave

drill

noun (1)

1: an instrument with an edged or pointed end for making holes in hard substances by revolving or by a succession of blows
also : a machine for operating such an instrument

So a jackhammer is a drill.

Quote

bit

noun (1)

(1): the biting or cutting edge or part of a tool
(2): a replaceable part of a compound tool that actually performs the function (such as drilling or boring) for which the whole tool is designed
"put a new bit in the drill"
"used a 1/4 inch bit to make the hole"

BTW @Blackwater 53393  I still have my dad's brace that he used for boring holes in stud walls for running wire - along with the 18" bit. 🙃

But that's what it says on the box!  (Dang, I wish I had a picture of that box.  I think it was an old yellow Winchester box.)

I get a kick out of getting some folks' knickers in a twist when I talk about ".45 Long Colt".  And they all know what I'm talking about.

Personally, I barely notice it and rarely give it a second thought when I hear it used.  Now, "Functionality" bugs the bejeebers out of me.

My roadsters looked very MG-ish, but the 240-Z was just beautiful.  I didn't own one but I drove  a friend's Z-Car while he was recovering from a disagreement with a pine tree up at Solitude.

my wifes uncle had the datsun roadster - every bit as much fun as my fathers triumph TR3 , and i wanted a 240Z in the worst way but it was out of my price range at that time , the 260 & 280 were nice but i just never could let go of that 240 dream

I thought the argument was - there never was a 45 Short Colt so there cannot be a 45 Long Colt!!

One I like is bullets versus cartridges. As a general rule I refer to them brass thingies with the lead thing on the end of them as cartridges. However I usually call 22 rimfire "22 bullets". Not sure why. I don't have 38 bullets. I don't have 45 bullets. But I was thinking the other day I had some 9 mm bullets. But I have 22 bullets.

Of course I also have 38 bullets, 45 bullets, 9 mm bullets, 22 bullets, 30 caliber bullets - I got all kinds of damn bullets. :P

Usually with the 45s and the 38s and the 44s and like that, I don't call them bullets or cartridges. I say ammo.:P:P
