Jiminy Cricket Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 Hello pards, I'm picking up a Belgian 16 gauge today from my FFL (thanks Dusty Morningwood). I also received 2 boxes of 16 ga MagTech all brass shells from Ballistic Products along with what I believe are all the shot, wads, and cards I'll need. I would like to open the floor to opinions on best loads for CAS. My inventory consists of: MagTech 16ga 2.5" Empty Brass Shotshells CCI Primers #350 Large Pistol Magnum Shooters World Multi Black Smokeless Powder .125 Maxi Nitro Card - 14ga Fiber Cushion Filler Wad 1/2" - 14ga Valu-Lead Shot #6 Factory Lead Shot US #7.5 Overshot Cards - 13ga Sodium Silicate Freezable Solution, 40% (Water Glass) Quote
Crazy Gun Barney, SASS #2428 Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 Jiminy, I also picked up an older Belgian 16ga from Dusty, old enough to not be proofed for smokeless.. It is a great gun. I have not used it in a match yet, but I did load up some brass shells. They shot quite well at the range, kind of a soft load I guess. only 16ga I ever shot so hard to judge. Since it is well over a century and a quarter old, I dont feel the need to shoot hot loads in it. Have not tried them against knock downs yet, but dont think I will have an issue. Heck, the barrel is almost long enough to reach out and push them over. My load was a 2.5 lee dipper of FFg (about 38 grains) and 7/8 oz 75 shot. Same other components as you except I used Elmers Glue All rather than the waterglass. Have fun! 1 Quote
Grizz Henry Posted November 7, 2025 Posted November 7, 2025 Cricket, My 16 Ga. CAS load in Magtech brass hulls was with 2F real black powder. This was a balanced load, 4.3 cc scoop of 2F, 14 Ga. card overpowder wad, 14 ga. fibre cushion wad, 4.3 cc scoop of shot and over shot card. I used Titebond II waterproof glue, 3 dollops spaced alternately around overshot card and then spread around the entire wad edge making good contact with the sides of the hull . Because I used this load also for hunting birds, I wanted a waterproof , tightly bonding glue. Worked perfectly for CAS as well as hunting. No unglued overshot wads - EVER ! If the Shooters World Multi Black BP substitute has a burn rate close or very similar to real BP, you also could do a balanced load as above. But, some further checking on that might be in order. If no data is available I suggest you start with light test loads and work up to a comfortable load. The Henry is anxiously awaiting to make your acquaintance !!! BG LOL. Grizz 1 Quote
