Ciderbarrel Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 Is there no SE black powder territorial championship? On the calendar, I see the SW championship this weekend (11/7/2025), and next year's NE championship the last weekend of June, but I cannot find the SE championship. Is it the Black Gold match in KY, or does one just not exist (yet)? 2 Quote
Hoss Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 A club has to request to host it. FWIW the Green Mountain Regulators are hosting the SW territorial BP match this weekend in conjunction with their annual “Regulator’s Revenge” annual match. This is one of the best matches you will ever go to! I’m just about packed, leaving tomorrow. 2 Quote
Dogmeat Dad, SASS #48563L Posted November 5, 2025 Posted November 5, 2025 (edited) I do not believe that one exists at this time, and it is not uncommon to not have BP Championship matches either. A club has to volunteer to host the match, get SASS approval to hold it, then it gets put on the schedule. At one time, the Fort White Cavalry (Fort White Gun Club in Fort White, Florida) hosted a conjoined SE BP Championship on Thursday (Darkness Falls) immediately followed by the International BP Championship on Friday & Saturday (Dark Day On The Santa Fe). It was awesome, especially when it was scheduled the week prior to Florida State Championship, the Ides of March! That was living, one trip to Florida, three matches, and 28 stages! The last time that was held was in 2022 and there has not been another SE BP Championship held that I am aware of. I keep hoping that another club will pick it up and run with it, but no one has so far to the best of my knowledge. Ciderbarrel Posted November 5, 2025 Author Posted November 5, 2025 Oof. I can only imagine the man-hours and logistics that have to go into a regional match, so a club will really have to have the space for the shooters and dependable people willing to take on the task of putting it together. I hope a club within a 5 hour drive of Charlotte will take it on one day, I would love to be able to shoot at a regional and not have to spend 25% of my PTO to attend. 😅 1 Quote

I was involved with the NE Regional when it was in Thurmont, Maryland for about 15 years, Match Director for the last 2 1/2 years of it being the Eastern Divisional, and Match Director for the MD State Championship held in Damascus from 2018 thru 2025. Now... I still run the monthly matches for the Damascus Wildlife Rangers, in Damascus, MD and serve a small roll on the committee for the Thurmont Rangers who will be taking over the Maryland State Championship starting next year, but I will say that it can really wear a body down. It takes a long term commitment from the host club as well, both in time and resources. Most folks have no idea the effort that goes into it, we do it for the love of the game and for our fellow Cowboys. I would love to see a club pick it up again, Holli and I really enjoyed that match, and Florida in the Winter Months beats Maryland in the Winter Months All Day - Every Day! Branchwater Jack SASS #88854 Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 They used to have it down in Florida several years ago. Once they stop doing it, I don't recall anybody else picked it up. Quote

Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted November 6, 2025 Posted November 6, 2025 BTW, anyone coming to Regulators Revenge this weekend, a cold front blows in Sunday. Not frigid, just cooler, but very windy. I guess that's good for blowing smoke away but wear a hat with stampede strings if you have one! 1 Quote

Blackwater 53393 Posted November 8, 2025 Posted November 8, 2025 (edited) The last SMOKEOUT IN THE HILLS at Possum Trot was a long time ago now. I wrote all of the stages and the stories that went with them and Ringer and a couple of other shooters in the club helped me rewrite portions that didn’t work or had perceived P traps in them. Copperhead Joe, Whiskey Creek Johnson, and I rough set all of the targets and I spent two days doing the final setting and test shooting the stages. Iron Maiden led a crew of folks in getting decoration and non shooting side matches designed and set up. There was a chili cookoff, pie eating contest, liars’ contest, and several other events. Whiskey Creek and Ringer set up the shooting side matches and arranged for them to be run and scored. TN Critr printed the badges and built the shooter’s list, proof read the Shooters’ Book and the stage descriptions. I’m not sure, but I think he arranged and oversaw the printing. Several of the aforementioned people spent all or part of the final week before the match at the range, making sure that everything and everyone was safe, ready, and right! The process began on the evening after the awards ceremony and entertainment the previous year! Those involved spent hours upon days for twelve months to make it all work and to seem like it was just another great weekend at the range!! At that time, SMOKEOUT was one of the biggest Black Powder events in SASS!! There were more Black Powder shooters than attended several State matches that year!! And we had almost as many smokeless shooters attend the event as well!! A shoot of this magnitude is a giant undertaking and to be successful, it has to clear a really high bar in every way! Possum Trot was Smokin’ Joe Anderson’s dream! He built it because he loved the game and because he wanted folks like him to have a place to come and stay and share his love for Cowboy Action Shooting! I truly wish that we had been able to keep it alive, ‘cause it was absolutely magical!! 22 hours ago, Lucky R. K. said: Plus one for me. Just sorry I didn't start attending sooner before it was closed down. The atmosphere, the people, the shooting, AND the food was the best. Lucky Yep!! The people who came there made it what Joe had known it would be!! Joe built the place with the help of his sons and his friends! He literally stayed awake nights to refuel generators for the cabins that guests stayed in until he could get electricity run to every cabin! He cooked breakfast, lunch, and supper for his guests and only put out a tip jar to cover expenses!! We finally convinced him to charge for the meals, but even then, he never charged what they were worth. He had a saloon built with second floor rooms, just like the ones that were famous in the old west and brought in live entertainment for big events. He had a general store where guests could buy all sorts of cowboy gear and clothes and even ammunition!! There was even a bath house with two showers and laundry facilities!! The “town” grew and the range did too! More cabins were built and more stages and props were added. From five stages that were all under cover, (we shot from two big barns with benches and even wood stoves!) to twelve stages, mostly built as individual covered structures! There was even space for camping outside of “town” and a main street with a huge open space with benches and swings for bonfires and impromptu parties! We’d shoot as many as six regular matches a month with the occasional additional “afternoon” match on Saturdays when the weather was good! The town developed a “general population” of shooters and characters that were present at nearly every match and event! This included several multi-time National and World Champions! Smokin’ Joe worked hard and constantly to make it better and bigger! I like to think that many of us helped in some way to make his dream come true!! The absolute truth is that he planted the seed and it grew beautifully. It’s a shame that we weren’t able keep his garden alive!! Edited November 9, 2025 by Blackwater 53393 3 2 Quote
Tom Bullweed Posted November 9, 2025 Posted November 9, 2025 I remember shooting a SE regional BP match around 2012-2014. At the same range that held Mule Camp. Only 26 shooters competed. POSSE 1!!!! Quote

It needs to be held in the cooler temperatures to get more competitors to attend. Early November after most clubs have slowed down major matches...just my two cents worth! Hoss Posted November 11, 2025 Posted November 11, 2025 The weather in Marble Falls was perfect for the SW territorial BP match. Cool in the morning, clear skies. Just enough wind to help the BP shooters. We had a great weekend. The Green Mountain Regulators know how to put on a match! And for icing on the cake, this came home with me via the raffle! 4 Quote
