Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted November 4 Posted November 4 Polar and grizzly bears, like eagles, killer whales, cougars and many other predators are genetically engineered killers. I am fascinated by and love most of them. I don't ever trust them or lower my guard around them. I had an eerie experience one time while hunting deer in Utah. I was on my way to meet my dad at a spot in a hollow a mile or so down a canyon. There was about fifteen inches of snow on the ground, not enough to hold me back much. I came to a place where a little avalanche had blocked my trail, so I turned around to go back and around. I took about twenty steps and there were cougar tracks on top of my tracks.... not more than fifteen feet behind me. The tracks turned uphill and vanished I stopped and scanned the entire area and saw nothing of that cat. I had heard nothing nor seen anything moving anywhere. He was like ghost. I got down and met Dad and we headed back to the car. I didn't sleep worth a damn for six weeks. I have only seen three cougars in the wild, one was near here crossing Arizona Highway 69A through a motel parking lot down by the Yavapai - Apache reservation in Prescott. Majestic beasts and beautiful, but spooky. 2 Quote

Majestic beasts and beautiful, but spooky. Several years ago a good friend was bow hunting on a friends ranch in Idaho. He was going up the trail towards the ridge. At the top the trail split to the left and right. He paused a minute before choosing the trail to his left. He had taken only a few steps when he sees a big Cougar was 20 yards away, charging right at him from the trail. He froze in his tracks while simultaneously raising his bow with the knocked arrow placing it between himself and the cat.. Because he didn't run like normal prey the big cat aborted the attack, veered off the trail, and stopped to watch him from the top of a large blown down tree about 15 yards from where he was standing. He said that he figured if he had turned right instead of left that the cougar would have taken him from behind. He also figures that because he froze in his tracks rather than taking evasive action, it caused the cougar to abort the attack. At that time you could use your Deer/Elk take to harvest a cougar so he decided to take the cat. Unfortunately because he lives in the PRoK he couldn't bring any of the cougar home so it resides as a full body mount at his friends house in Idaho. Quote
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted November 4 Posted November 4 They are not afraid of you, just cautious. They can calculate odds in their head faster than any computer. There was a story going around of a professional cat hunter who had his pack of seven dogs that accidently cornered a cougar in a parking lot. The cat killed three of them and he had to destroy two more. It was said the fight lasted only s few seconds' The cat got away. 1 Quote
