11/3 update:

The surgery went very well! The surgeon had a plan on all the things he needed to do. He had marked several places on his hand, wrist and arm to make incisions. He started where the original incision was and, to his surprise, everything was right there and was in way better shape than expected. The tendon had somehow hung up on scar tissue and had not retracted into his arm. Even though he has lost all the feeling he had gained the last 2 years, the nerve was still attached, meaning there is a good chance he will get that feeling back. The ends of the tendon were still in good shape, which allowed him to make a strong repair without needing any grafts. He was able to do everything right there at the first incision site. He also removed scar tissue which should allow things to work better. He said that everything turned out as well as you could hope for.

What a miracle!! Thanks everyone for all your support and prayers!

-------------------

Many people have heard about Skrap P's thumb injury and have asked for an update, so here it is. Also, we would appreciate any prayers on his behalf.

The quick version is: Skrap P injured his left (hammer) thumb while shooting at Bordertown last week. He will be having a very risky surgery on Monday to try to reattach his tendon for the second, and final time. If they aren't able to fix it, or if it doesn't last, they will have to fuse his thumb.

The full version is: Right before Land Run 2023, Skrap P cut his left thumb almost completely off. It severed the tendon and both arteries. We were blessed to find an extremely good hand surgeon who reattached the tendon and one of the arteries. It was literally a miracle that he was able to keep his thumb. After several months and a lot of physical therapy, he was back to doing what he loves most, shooting. Very slowly, he started getting a little feeling back, but most of his thumb has remained numb. Because of this, he will often tear it open while shooting, without realizing it. He regularly uses super glue, tape, and pain relief cream that he keeps handy in his gun cart.

Land Run and Bordertown this year were particularly painful and hard on his thumb. He pushed through and was shooting gunfighter amazingly well at Bordertown, up until his 11th stage. He shot his rifle and shotgun fine, but when he picked up his pistols, he couldn't move his thumb, had a lot less feeling, and was in tremendous pain. He somehow managed to finish the stage. He was then checked out by another shooter, who is also a paramedic, and he confirmed that his tendon had disconnected. Skrap P wanted to finish his match, so the ROs allowed him to shoot his final stage as a duelist. It was a bit rough, but he did it.

When we met with the surgeon, he was very surprised this had happened because he had never had one re-rupture. He said the way he had attached the tendon previously was the strongest way possible, and far stronger than the way most surgeons do it. Due to the critical nature of the initial surgery and how things are now, he can't do near as much a second time, making it much more difficult to make it strong again. He will likely need a graft from another tendon, and because the ruptured tendon has retracted back into his arm, it will require multiple incisions.

The surgeon explained that because Skrap P is so young (16) it is definitely worth trying to fix, even with the risk involved. He is hopeful that it will work out well, but made sure we understood that if the repair doesn't last, a third surgery is not an option. At that point, the thumb would have to be fused.

He will have this surgery on Monday and, of course, will have another long recovery and a lot of physical therapy.

We are so thankful for our wonderful SASS family and for your concern for Skrap P. We would love to see him gain full use of his thumb again and have it last. We know with enough faith and prayers that we will see a miracle. We invite you to join us in praying for Skrap P. Thank you!!

Gotta tell you, I love to shoot.  At an age similar to his, I got a sports knee injury and kept at the sport for another couple of decades.  I do understand the attraction.  I limp a bit as an old man, but still get around well enough for my age.  But a thumb!  So many things that require either or both, and a long life ahead.  Second thoughts might well be in order!  Wishing him all the best in outcome & decision process.
