Rye Miles #13621 Posted October 30 Posted October 30 I send an occasional $15 to St.Jude because I don’t want to get hooked into their monthly donations. I sent $15 three weeks ago and I’ve received 3 requests and thank you notes, one is coming today! Are they spending all my donation on mailings back to me? They’re NOT the only ones btw. They all do it. Makes you wonder🙄 Quote
Dawg Hair, SASS #29557 Posted October 30 Posted October 30 I have been sending them a monthly amount for about the last 30 yrs. And if the Lord helps me I will continue to do so til the day I die. Quote
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted October 30 Posted October 30 it's like anyother charity. one organiztion to help people, another to tear at the hearts of people and seek donations well, let me correct that, some charities do not actually help people. 1 Quote
Alpo Posted October 30 Posted October 30 It's not just charities. I bought life insurance policies for my grandchildren when they were babies. I get between 3 and 7 mailings a month from that life insurance company wanting me to either buy term insurance for myself or by life insurance for another grandkid. I figure it has to cost at least a dollar per mailing. Printing it, putting it the envelope, running it through the stamper. The cost of the paper in the envelope. It's got to cost about a buck each. And I'm not going to buy anything else from them. Twice a year I get a bill and twice a year I pay the insurance. And that's the only thing I need from them - send me a bill when it's time to pay. Everything else is a waste of their money. And I've wondered occasionally how much cheaper the insurance would be if they weren't spending all that money on mailings that were being thrown in the trash. 1 Quote
Gracos Kid Posted October 30 Posted October 30 Please don't take this as a criticism of St. Judes, as my wife and I have contributed also. However, I was surprised when I went to the website to check the filings of St. Jude 990 Reports, and learned that all monies donated to St. Judes goes to a distribution site in Lebanon, Syria for dispersal. Danny Thomas was originally from Lebanon and I suppose that is why there is a connection as he formed the charity there. It did peak my interest since Syria does not favor the U.S. 1 Quote

I sent the Citizens committee for the right to keep and bear arms $25 one time. About twice a month for the next 2 years I got a letter asking me to give them more money. 1 1 Quote
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted October 30 Posted October 30 I've donated to some 'helpful charities' and also started getting letters and more letters. What agitates me the most is when I donated to our local fund raiser to the Knoxville Fire Dept. Shortly thereafter, I started getting phone calls from a couple other Fire Departments to help their favorite fund raiser causes. At the time, I worked for the City of Knoxville, in Civil Service, so the Knox Fire Dept had access to my phone number. When my phone started getting calls from Chattanooga Fire Dept, I had a gut feeling that somebody in the Knox Fire Dept was selling my number. About 6 months later, the Knox Fire Dept called again, to THANK ME for my generous gift and ask if I could give again. I told them 'NO' and I also told them about those other Fire Depts call me and I felt like they had sold my number. I would not be giving again. ..........Widder 3 Quote

That's the main reason I don't bother anymore. I'd join at a Gun Show on Saturday, and a renewal notice would be waiting in my mailbox by the time I got home! At least it seemed that way. One would show up before the month was out, and every month after that for a couple years. They had to have at spent at LEAST as much on printing and mailing as I did on joining . 1 1 Quote
Eyesa Horg Posted October 30 Posted October 30 It's certainly put a bad taste in my mouth for donating 😢. It's a shame, as these places could get a lot more money if they didn't irritate their donors with all the constant begging and waste of our donation. 2 Quote
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted October 30 Posted October 30 Nothing against firefighters and police but some of the organizations collecting in their name are frauds, spend most of the money on themselves and use a small percentage for “the cause”, just enough that a fraud charge would not stick. 2 1 Quote

Precisely. The outfits that they hire to do the grubbing get most of the take. The FDs & PDs get a very small percentage. The grubbing industry is VERY lucrative. Also, see Red Cross. 1 Quote

The one that I recall collected funds “to send kids to baseball games “ or something like that. Quote

Rye Miles #13621 Posted October 31 Author Posted October 31 I just got my 3rd thank you mailing yesterday for a $15 donation I made 2 weeks ago. All 3 included either address labels or scratch pads. They do great work for those kids don’t get me wrong, but damn they’re relentless! 1 Quote
