He tested a LOT of ammo for penetration, expansion, and consistency of performance. This is his 9mm results, but he tested most current calibers. https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/#9mm The reason I'd rather carry a 45 over a 9 is because of better and more consistent ammo performance. It's amazing to me how inconsistent a lot of self defence ammo is. Especially in 9mm. Lack of over penetration and consistent expansion are the two things I look for in self defense ammo. I find it interesting that most ammo brands that perform well in 45 do not perform well in 9 and vice versa.

Rooster Ron Wayne Posted October 22, 2025 Posted October 22, 2025 Im not a 9mm fan so I actually have very little experience with them . But it looks like the average is 115 124 and 147 . I say split the difference and go 124 🤔

Yes, I'll take whatever the dead guy in front of me was carrying. It's most likely 9mm. Until then, I'll carry 124 grain bullets.

Current EDC, but I've pretty much carried nothing but CZ for the last 25 years, to be honest. Ammo has changed over the years, but maker has remained the same, unless I am carrying my Smith 64-3. This little pistola is much more accurate than people expect, shoots like a target pistol. I have 3 CZ's and 5 Sigs. I carry 115grn for all of them. I have shot all the different grains and I didn't see a need for anything else. I have the P10S, P01 and the Rami in CZ and a P365 SAS, P365XC, P238 (380), P320XM and the P320M18 in Sig. I carry them all depending on what I am doing. TM

Texas Maverick Posted October 22, 2025 Posted October 22, 2025 All of these were shooting 115 gr. CZ P01 CZ P10S Sig P320 M18 Sig P320 XC Sig P365 SAS Sig P365 XM All these were set at 15 yards using 2 hands. TM
Dapper Dave Posted October 22, 2025 Posted October 22, 2025 The P10S shoots like a much bigger gun. I also use a P10 C, and dearly missed my other CZs I had to sell over the years due to my ex wife, P01, PCR, P09, SP01 Phantom, P07 Duty, loooooong list. 😞
watab kid Posted October 23, 2025 Posted October 23, 2025 i have no issues with how my 0=9mm shoot all of them are great , i do prefer my 45s as thats what i started with in life , the 9s were a later item , but i had a few when young , i have a lot more now
Vail Vigilante Posted October 23, 2025 Posted October 23, 2025 First, determine what cycles in your particular arm. I have found that RN is horrible in my Glock when I run Magpul mags. So for USPSA I use 127 Truncated bullets from Brass Monkey. I arrived at that when I found 124 Hornady HAP works well. It is just a bit more expensive than I need for the games I play. The HAP is the gamer version of the XTP in that weight. The XTP or CCI "flying ashtray" style, is for when I use the Glock for protection. I have also found that my G34 runs best in the upper third of the loading data Min-Max numbers.
