Why not!  Everyone else does.  Medical offices, libraries, government offices, some stores, restaurants. etc.

There's a Thai Restaurant nearby that has a sign on the door to the effect of "We're closed for all holidays."  I said to the  the owner "So you're open what? Two or three days a week?"

He doesn't talk to me anymore, which is okay by me.  I don't like Thai food anyway.

The schools here are open in my town, the school bus just came down the street. So no govt buildings or  post offices but schools are open? Weird😳

Happy Columbus Day back at ya Rye!

Seems a lot of people get their panties all in a wad over someone who never stepped foot in North America, or even Central America for that matter.

He is said to have landed in Central America in 1502.

Lessee, Chris was traveling on money borrowed from someone else, using three ships unsuited for the job and insufficiently stocked, not certain where he was going, didn't know for certain where he was, mis-identified where he landed, claimed the land for someone who didn't have any right to claim much of anything at that time, was working with a semi-mutinous and poorly suited crew, and was lost most of the time.

Based on that, I feel slighted that no one has demanded a national holiday named after me.

Hell, I've screwed up that badly more than once.

I suppose you were too polite to mention the nine ships he lost over four voyages.

My daughter told me that school is so closed all week. Fall break. Not Columbus Day - no no, that's evil and racist. Fall break.

By the by - I thought Columbus day was yesterday. October 12th, 1492. Not the 13th, not the 10th, not the 8th. 12th.

Columbus Day, which is on the second Monday of October, celebrates Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. This is an important date in many Italian-American communities; it is controversial in some Native American communities. It is celebrated in 23 states. (Copied from the internet)

I'll bet it was hard for him buy insurance...or hire a crew that was worth a pinch.

I like indigenous people better than the over-used and outlandishly false "Native American".

Most of you folks are, by definition, Native Americas, (I know I AM) born and raised here.

If he could have hired a crew that was worth a pinch, he probably wouldn't have lost nine ships over four voyages.

It wasn’t so much the crew as it was the ships. Lots of ships got lost and sunk in bad weather back then. Not much technology over 500 yrs ago. They didn’t fair too well in storms at sea,
