You have been invited to the big city. You have been invited there by an institution. The institution is picking up the check. They paid the plane fare, they pay the hotel bill, everything.

The clerk at the hotel tells you when you check in if anything you need, just sign for it because the institution is picking it up.

You come from the deep south. It is March. Spring. You've flown to Chicago. It is not spring yet. And you didn't bring your Arctic parka.

You buy a jacket at the hotel gift shop.

Would you pay for it out of your pocket or would you sign for it and let the institution pick it up?

This is an online story and they paid for it themselves. I think I would probably pay for it myself because I was the one stupid enough to not bring a heavy coat to go north where they frequently have that cold wet white stuff.

But the institution was supposed to pay for everything. Hmmm.

I would pay for my coat.

It doesn't pass the smell test to do otherwise.

What kind of stupid do you have to be to not bring warm clothes to Chicago in March?

But, if I was to be caught like that,  pay for it myself.

Apparently my kind of stupid. I went to visit my daughter for Christmas one year. She lives in Atlanta. When I left Florida it was in the high 70s. Did not even occur to me that it would be colder. First thing I did when I got there was go to the store and buy a coat.

I went to New Jersey on business, in February. I was wearing an aviators leather jacket over a t-shirt, with a baseball cap. Walked through the airport to the car rental place and got my car, then walked out the door and immediately walked back inside. Sat down in the middle of the hallway and opened up my suitcase. Took off my jacket, took out a heavy shirt and put it on over my t-shirt, put my jacket back on and zip it up. Took off my baseball cap and took out a watch cap and put it on. Got out my heavy gloves. I had actually packed this stuff but I was not wearing it. In Florida in February it was in the seventies. In New Jersey in February it was snowing. But generally - well I was going to say that "generally you do this", but maybe you don't do this.  Generally I packed based on what I'm used to. If I lived in Maine and I was going to visit someone in South Florida in January, I'm sure I would pack heavy clothes because - it's January. It's cold.

That's my fault for being stupid enough or naive enough to not bring a coat with me  !

I would pay for it myself.

If you think you will never go anywhere it's colder than 65degF, then let the company pay for the coat. But if you are smart, pay for the coat yourself. Otherwise, it could be considered the property of the institution. The only minor problem you might encounter on your return trip is whether your suitcase is big enough to hold the coat, or whether you may just have to hang on to it, or find space in the storage space on the plane.
