What position have your daughter in laws parents have on this?

I'm against uprooting kids on a whim.

It would be nice if they would encourage visiting instead of a full-blown move across the country.

They need to sit down and do a comparison budget.

Excellent idea. This would be a first step. My idea a 2nd or 3rd step.
I can’t believe I forgot about this, Dave. I used to use these websites to calculate what salary I should ask for when changing cities and jobs.

This one is the best & most accurate site I used. I entered Detroit, MI to Los Angeles, CA. I entered a $50,000 salary for Detroit income. Check out the results in the screen shots below this link where I got the information.

Unfortunately to get more info you have to pay for it. I guess it isn’t like the old days.

There are other sites, but I found that many are scam sites by realtors or they are seriously inaccurate. Some were developed and not maintained since before Covid, apparently.

I guess since I retired I have forgotten or blocked many things from my past work life.

My sister lives in the beach town of Santa Monica.  Nice house.  Made the money owning a software company.  Her 3 br 1400 sq ft small yard home property tax has increased beyond 60K per year.  Bottom line, nobody moves to the LA area unless someone has a job offer paying enough money to live there.

One thing positive I can tell you about Santa Monica.  Homeless people are paid $200 welfare money each week and there are places on the beach for them to sleep.  The restaurants provide left over food on a rotating basis.  Not bad weather most of the year.  Your son and his family have a chance of becoming homeless if they move to the LA area.  If so, this Santa Monica area is relatively safe beach living.  Good Luck!
