Alpo Posted October 11, 2025 Posted October 11, 2025 Not sexual harassment itself - I'm sure that's been around ever since men and women got together. I mean the term. There is an online story. The guy is his senior year in college. He graduated high school in 73 so this will be late 76 early 77. There was a hazing incident at the frat, and he calls a meeting where he reads a letter that he proposes to send to the National chairman of their fraternity. In the letter he says there was a hazing incident involving sexual harassment. Did that term exist in 1977? Because the first time I remember hearing it was in the mid-90s. I realize this is fiction and authors can make mistakes. I'm just curious whether he's wrong or I'm wrong.
Subdeacon Joe Posted October 11, 2025 Posted October 11, 2025 That term was first used in 1973, MIT, in a study about workplace discrimination.
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted October 11, 2025 Posted October 11, 2025 I never heard "Political correctness" until my daughter came home from college for Christmas holiday and was telling us that she wasn't considered for any of the sororities because she wasn't "politically correct". She didn't let it slow her down. She graduated third in her class and inside of five years started two businesses (and later two more). When she finally got married she sold three of them and became an "overnight" very wealthy lady. A couple of years later she sold her half of business number four to her partner for a plane ticket and meals to DC to see what he had going. He retired last year and has more money than Midas.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 It was 1982. My company’s president received notice of a ten million dollar law suit against Senior VP of sales and the company for sexual harassment. Pres called lawyer, lawyer asked around and called back “if SVP is not out of there in ten minutes you will probably lose”. Five minutes is all it took.
John Kloehr Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 Not in 1952, maybe some signs of it emerged around 1970 (the last year for JPLs "Miss Guided Missile): https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/images/slice-of-history-70th-anniversary-of-miss-guided-missile/
Capt. R. Hugh Kidnme Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 Was part of my onboarding, or orientation at the first company I worked for after graduating college in 1980.
Rip Snorter Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 Must have been '81 or '82. I was a middle manager on the rise, fit gym rat at a major corporate event, food, beverages and entertainment. A more than attractive young woman came up and put one arm around my waist, actually grabbed my belt buckle, on the other side, an upper body appendage against my arm, a nice one too. Asked her if this was harassment. Her killer response, "Only if I say so!" Yup!
watab kid Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 i dont recall it in the 70s but in the 80s yes - that doesnt mean it wasnt around before because we all know it was happening long before - i remember it in corporate situation in the 60s - i wasnt working in the 50s so i cant speak to that ,
J-BAR #18287 Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 Dang! I volunteered in the sexual revolution in the 60s but saw very little action. Is it too late to volunteer for harassment?

Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 After we got bought by oracle, there were several online HR reviews that we had to “attend”, some annual, some biennial, such as dealing with the government, sexual harassment, what constitutes a simple gift vs. a bribe, etc. I took notes.
