Part 1 - have you ever asked someone for their autograph?

Part 2 - did you want them to autograph something that they did or did you just want their name on a piece of paper?

I have had two people autograph things for me.

Joe Bowman - the Straight Shooter - at Mule Camp was selling videos, and I bought one, and I asked him to autograph it.

Doc Shapiro wrote a book on black powder shooting. I bought a copy, and asked him to autograph it.

That makes sense to me. If Babe Ruth hit the game winning home run, and I caught the ball, getting him to autograph the ball makes sense. But just walking up to him one day and getting his name on the piece of paper? Why?

Obviously I am not an autographed hound. ;)

I asked Bishop Kallistos (Ware) to autograph the first VHS tape of a 4 tape set of his lectures.

Re, getting famous people to just sign a piece of paper, or signing an autograph book.  Some people collect stamps.   Some people collect barbed wire. Some people collect matchbooks.  Why? Because it interests them.

I can see how autograph collecting might be interesting, especially if you have them organized.  Maybe write down the place,  time,  and date along with the autograph.  Years later and you're looking through your book, you see "Eli Wallach."  Then look at the place and date. OK, That was the opening of Godfather 3 in your town. He was there promoting it.  Dredges up all the memories,  in some ways better than a snapshot.

I autographed my books when asked....and took a dollar off the price.  If asked why I'd always tell the buyer, "Because it's worth a dollar to have my ego boosted.  Thank you."

Got Steve Wozniak's on the program flyer he spoke at.  Framed it

Also, Holy Terror's for my wife Violet Peacock (semi-character* from the movie Stagecoach, one first one with John Wayne in it). Put it in a frame with her picture from the SASS Chronicle

*She was only spoken about in the movie--never seen

Yes, I have asked for Autographs.  No, never on a random piece of scrap paper.  It will be in a book, dvd case, album cover, playing card, ticket to the show, or if it is a formal autograph session and I have not brought something specific to be autographed, I will happily purchase of the 8x10's they always have for sale.

Did they mention her name?

I remember Mr Peacock kept wanting to return to the bosom of his family in Kansas City Kansas, but I don't remember him ever saying what the bosom's name was.

I ran into John Force at a drag race once.  I had his hat on, and he asked me if I wanted him to sign it.  I let him, and I haven’t worn it since.  It’s a pretty special hat because of the memory, not the autograph.

Over the years I have had some autographs from folks I knew.  Boston John Ducette (who sent me a poem caller Tom Taylor based on  something I told him), Utah Bob DeGroff, Charlie MacNeil, Annie Lee Independent, R. L. Wilson, Louis L'Mour, Rocky Marciano, Rocky Graciano, Gen. Curtis LaMay, Tom Selleck, John Russell, and others.

I have three or four framed on my wall, the others are in a scrap book.

I haven't asked for an autograph but my wife got autographs from Stan Lynde on several of his books as presents for me.

I played a lot of golf in the 70s and 80s.  Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus played an exhibition match in Kansas City about 1980 or so.  I was in the gallery for that game, and they autographed their photos in the program for me.  I framed those autographed photos and gave them to my father in law (also a golfer) as a Christmas present.  He displayed them in his office until he retired.  The framed photos stayed with me for a few years until they passed to my son (another golfer) who now displays them in his office.

The only other initials I prize are those of Hunter Baskins (Yul Lose) on a percussion revolver loading stand and a delightful box with a lid.  The man knows what he's doing with wood.

Thanks, Yul!
