I think I may have mentioned this idea once before, but I've given it some more thought, so I thought I'd bring it up again.

Now, Josey Wales is an alternative way to doing CAS whereby the rifle, and sometimes the shotgun, are swapped out for more pistols.   I've always wanted to try this, and there is a local club that's gonna include soon, so we shall see.

But, instead of an all pistols, thing, how about an all rifles thing?   At first, this would most likely need to be a single stage side match to see how people respond to it rather than to try create an alternate way of doing an entire shoot ala Josey Wales.  The most simple way to do it would be to swap out the pistols for another main match rifle and use the same targets for both the rifle and "pistol" sweeps.   Leave the shotgun the shotgun.   But there could be other ways to do it.  The simplest would be a to use a third rifle for the shotgun, but does this create potential timer issues?   Would they be pre-loaded, or used single shot?  If single shot, would it "allowed" to use a single shot rifle in a pistol caliber?   Would alternate targets be needed?   Another possible alteration would be to use a ,22 rifle for the pistols, and perhaps a rifle caliber rifle for the shotgun with alternate safe distance targets.    Many possible variations, I suppose, limited only by the imagination of how the host club decides to design the scenario.

Along the same lines, what about an all shotgun thing?  Instead of just a lot of shotgun targets, you break it up by needing multiple shotguns.   Perhaps you require a side by side or single barrel for the traditional "shotgun" targets, but you require a repeating shotgun for the rifle and pistol targets.  The repeater(s) could be preloaded and reloaded to go after all the targets, or you you could use two different repeaters for the "rifle" and "pistol" targets.  Again, it would need to be a single stage side match at first to see how people respond to it, and would be limited only by the imagination of scenario designer.  Maybe the pistol shotgun could be a "bootleg" or "Terminator" style one, but not be required to be.  Flexibility, I think, is the key to getting people to try these things.   Should the shotgun event include fliers?   All options to consider.  :)

What do we call them?   Well, the pistols thing is Josey Wales.   I suppose the rifle thing could be Lucas McCain.   But who is famous for using a shotgun?  The only person I can think of is Doc Holiday, who is always portrayed as using a short barrel SxS.

I don't know if these would ever catch on.   To be honest, I don't know how popular Josey Wales is, and I've never seen one here in New England.   But the only way we'd ever know is try.

Any takers?

Verdant Mountain Vigilantes has been holding a Josey Wales shoot every fall for years! Come on up and join us next year. Our match was just last weekend and fun was had by all. Pards did a lot of shooting other folks guns just for the heck of it. We had a lot of laughs and a lot of fun. Even got a couple new shooters to play! YeeHaw 🤠 We're only about a half hour further than when at St.J with excellent camping and a fire every night. This year, thanks to Des & Tyler, we watched Josey Wales & Palerider movies by the campfire!

Come join the fun in the Vermont hills.

Our club offers specialty categories every once in awhile during the off-season (fall-winter). The category is announced before the match via email and posting on the clubs forum so people can get ready and come prepared. All standard categories are still offered.  Two of them are as follows:

Street Howitzer Category

PISTOLS:  One Pistol Required. Any SASS legal single action.
-Any SASS legal shooting style (including gunfighter - load 2 in one pistol and 3 in the other, shoot the five-shot pistol string as normal and the other five shots with the shotgun “pistol”.).

RIFLE:  One Rifle Required - Any SASS legal main match Rifle.

SHOTGUN:  One or two Shotguns may be used:  (1)-for pistol targets, (1)-for shotgun targets. Same shotgun can be used for both.

-The Shotgun used for “pistol” targets must be a pump action 97 or a lever action 87, loaded with (5)-rnds at the loading table, action empty, hammer down, and closed.
-Only one pistol is used by the Street Howitzer competitors.  The other “pistol” sequence is shot at the pistol targets using the same order as the pistol shooters with the loaded/stoked shotgun.
-Either (5)-shot pistol sequence may be engaged with the shotgun.
-The Shotgun used for “pistol” targets starts staged at the pistol position or in hand, depending on individual stage directions.
-The second shotgun (if used) may be any SASS legal Shotgun.

Rifleman Category

PISTOLS:  No Pistols used.

RIFLE:
-Two Rifles Required:  (1)-for “pistol” targets (rifle distance), (1)-for rifle targets.
-The close pistol targets are not used by the Rifleman competitors.  Instead, the “pistol” sequence is shot at the rifle targets using the same order as the pistol shooters.  The “rifle” sequence is the same for everyone.
-The Rifle used for “pistol” targets starts staged at the pistol position or in hand, depending on individual stage directions.
-The two Rifles must be SASS legal pistol caliber main match rifles.

SHOTGUN:  Any SASS legal shotgun

I shot a match about five years ago where one stage was a progressive sweep on six targets plus four scattergun targets.  Target one was about five yards away, and each target progressed another 1.5 yards.  The obvious method was to start on the close targets with the pistolas and shoot 5 & 5+1 with the rifle on the final targets.

One cowboy decided to shoot the close targets with his rifle and cleared the TO, spotters and cowboys ready to pick up brass.

All-Rifle can be done, but safety was need to be considered with the higher velocities and hard targets.

We have shot an all shotgun stage. 20 rounds required. Start at normal shooting position and then walking down range shooting targets until you get to the end of the berm. As a Black Powder shooter i bought a leather forearm cover. The barrel gets really, really hot. did i say the barrel gets hot?
