Currently I shoot a pair of stainless 5.5" Uberti 58's with gated Kirst conversions in 45colt and have been for nearly the entire time i've been shooting CAS. After my placing 9th overall shooting duelist at the WV state championship, I decided my 58s have served me well for the last 9 years but it's time to get serious and get a pair of Vaqueros. A buddy let me shoot his SASS vaqueros vs my remingtons and i was nearly 5 seconds faster with the rugers vs my 58's shooting the same way (5 rounds on right target, 5 on left) . So i've decided I want a pair of stainless SASS vaqueros, 45colt with the 5.5" barrels but Ruger has them listed as "currently unavailable" and there are no sets on gunbroker. Did ruger discontinue the SASS vaqueros?

They run the SASS Vaqueros about once a year. They sell out pretty quickly. Have your local gun shop get on the wait list with every distributor possible for a set. Or watch the Classifieds here. They come up from time to time.

Ruger makes a few sets and when those are gone they will run off a few more sets.  It is 100% no big deal.  There are only two differences between a "SASS" New Vaquero and a regular model.  One, they have a little round SASS cowboy glued onto the grips.  Two, they have a Montado/SBH low profile hammer.  They have no action job.  Most people junk the grips and replace them with aftermarket grips.  The hammers are a $35.00 item and the most common modification to the NMV.  Just buy a regular Vaquero, replace the hammers and save yourself few bucks.

They were limited production TALO exclusives, and I think they've been gone for at least a couple years. They might commission more, they might not.

If you can find Montado hammers, or just put SBH hammers on a standard New Vaquero, open up the rear sight a little, and can live without the SASS medallions in the black plastic checkered grips, "special" consecutive SASS s/n's, and the red plastic double case, you've got pretty much the same revolvers at less cost.

I would also contact the 3-4 closest SASS clubs in your area, email the club POC and ask them to inquire with their members if anyone has a set that you're interested in, for sale.  You'll probably be able to buy a used set in a face to face meeting, but remember FFL rules if crossing state lines, if applicable.

There must be many used Vaquero's available. What happened to all the guns that former and deceased SASS members used?

Sadly, when family members get a hold of this stuff many times they just wind up in a crate in the basement for future something or at the pawnshop. 😪

I have a friend who has a number of cowboy guns from his days competing. He has told me he is bequeathing them to one friend and certain family members. The sets will be broken up and given out upon his death to relatives. None of whom play in CAS.

Boomstick,

I have a pair of Ruger SASS 45's I would probably sell. PM me if you want to discuss them.

Guns.com has the .45 colt version avaliable, pricey though.  Looks like the .357/.38 are sold out.
