Dirty Dan Dawkins Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Am I the I the only one? Some of the simplest things give me calm, peace and enjoyment. For example, I enjoy watching bread turn brown in the toaster. Particularly english muffins. Don'y ask me why but I find it soothing. 3 Quote

Cyrus Cassidy #45437 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 The smell of gunpowder is one of the most calming and satisfying things to me. Having grown up on firearms ranges, I'm certain this became a deep psychological factor for me long before I went to combat, and combat doesn't see to have changed anything in that regard. 1 Quote
Rye Miles #13621 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 I like going to the park by the lake and just looking out at the vastness of Lake Erie. 3 Quote
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 I live in Tucson. Desert landscapes abound. But some places , like parks, still have grass. When I pass by someplace like that and smell fresh mown grass, for just a moment, it takes me back to my childhood in Ohio. 2 Quote

Smokin Gator SASS #29736 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 I built an elevated deck in our back yard that doubles as a fort for our grandkids. It's got mature Rewoods around it. It faces the back part of our 3 acres and I can see our goats, chickens and gardens from there. All shaded. I love sitting up there reading a book with a cold or hot drink depending on the weather. 3 side have short fence boards around it that make it look like an old fort a little. There's a ladder and I made an angled ramp with old fishing nets that the kids like climbing up into the side entrance like they're Spidernan. 3 Quote
Subdeacon Joe Posted September 22 Posted September 22 Listening to a heavy mist in a grove of trees...the moisture collects on the leaves and drips randomly. Sit still and watch the movement of the leaves and the sounds of the drops hitting other leaves and the ground. Maybe the rustling of small critters on the ground. Or at night, on a clear night, outside, fire has died to coals and the occasional small lick of flame, either watching the ever changing orange/red/black patterns in it, or slouched in your chair, head tilted back, watching the stars and maybe the occasional shooting star. Or, in the opposite direction, 2 Quote

Sheriff Dill Posted September 22 Posted September 22 The sound of the ocean in Maine when we go. Definitely not the rotting sea weed smell but the sound for sure. And sitting at the airport as the planes and fighter jets take off and land is our go to for my wife and I 2 Quote
Blackwater 53393 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 I live where when it’s quiet late at night, you can hear the trucks and other vehicles out on the interstate. I can sit on the deck and hear ‘em after folks go in. There’s been a lot of folks move in since we got here 45 years ago. I used to be able to hear the racing over at the drag strip on Saturday night if I wasn’t there myself! The traffic on the interstate is still close enough that when it’s really quiet, I can still hear the semis and the Harleys and the occasional shrieking rice bike or hotrod. I ain’t heard ‘em over at the track for several years now… Damned urban sprawl!! 3 Quote

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted September 22 Posted September 22 This may be an odd one, but certain jingles that the companies who created them no longer use, or that are from companies that no longer exist, always make me smile when my memory recalls them. "Tweeter, for times like these!" "At Osco, you can count on people who care." "Today's neighborhood drugstore, C V S." "You deserve a break today, so get up get on your way, to McDonald's. We do it all for you." And a few others. There's just something calming about the music that accompanied these lyrics. 1 Quote

My shop/toybox has a metal roof, (for that matter, so does the house…) and when it rains I sometimes just stop what I’m doing and sit back and listen for a while!! The insulation in the roof muffles the sound a good bit, but 2,950 square feet of metal roof is like a great big speaker!! I sometimes wish that the ceiling in the house wasn’t there so I could hear the rain falling while I’m sleeping in my bedroom!! 1 Quote

I sometimes wish that the ceiling in the house wasn’t there so I could hear the rain falling while I’m sleeping in my bedroom!! Down here they put between 4 to 6 inches of a Styrofoam type insulation slab between the metal roof and plywood which deadens the sound tremendously. With attic insulation, it didn't seem any louder, or quieter for the matter, than a normal roof. I wired a small house that was really nothing more than a giant walk in cooler with drywall on the ceiling/walls and a tile floor. During the normal afternoon deluges, that thing was like being inside of bass drum...not pleasurable at all. I don't know how the people that ended up living there could stand it. I do love a nice slow rain under an uninsulated tin roof like on a porch or garage. Edited September 23 by Cypress Sun 1 Quote
Widder, SASS #59054 Posted September 23 Posted September 23 I'm totally DEAF. Really. Without my hearing aids, I hear no sounds.....nada. Not a blame thing. Soooooo, I enjoy sitting around, reading or even watching a football game without my hearing aids. The peace and quite is remarkable. And right now, I'm talking with my Wire Pards with no outside noises to distract me. ..........Widder 4 Quote
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted September 23 Posted September 23 I live in Bedford, Massachusetts. That's a town between Lexington and Concord. Driving over to the Battle Green in Lexington, and then over to the Old North Bridge in Concord, to see where it all began, and then back to the Bedford Public Library to see the actual flag carried into battle by the Bedford Minutemen at said bridge on April 19th, 1775 always makes me feel warm inside. 1 Quote
