Lefty Lead Shot Posted September 15, 2025 Posted September 15, 2025 I have a Cimarron 1873 rifle with what appears to be a broken bottom tab on the bolt face. Doesn't appear to be replaceable like the extractor. I assume someone can repair them but can't seem to find any information on it. Looks like I could buy a new one from VTI for $170 plus shipping. What other options do I have?
Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted September 15, 2025 Posted September 15, 2025 You said “appears”. Are you sure it’s broken off? If your problem is failure to eject cases, check your extractor. Might be a broken tip or loss of tension.
Cemetery Posted September 15, 2025 Posted September 15, 2025 If it is broken, reach out to Lassiter. He's aka Tom's Single Action Shop in New Lebanon OH.
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted September 15, 2025 Posted September 15, 2025 Common problem and lots of smiths repair them. Go to this list and find someone close to you.

What other options do I have? Many gunsmiths are now milling out the bottom of the bolt and adding a replaceable tab, similar to the extractor. In your neck o' the woods, check with Lassiter. If not, there are others you can mail the bolt to for repair.

Also when you get the bolt fixed, first thing to do is check the timing on your rifle. As the guns wear over time, the timing can get slightly off. This is what causes the majority of broken lower tabs.
SGT. ELI 35882 GUNFIGHTER Posted September 15, 2025 Posted September 15, 2025 For smalI caliber bolts I milled them out and put in the Uberti replacement tab that way owner could just buy the tab and replace it themselves if it happened again
