Mezcal Charlie Posted September 12, 2025 Posted September 12, 2025 I’m very enthused and a little surprised today. I bid on an 1860 in 44-40 and won it. My question is this: how many of you have the sling swivels on your 1860’s? Do they interfere or bother your shooting?
Sedalia Dave Posted September 12, 2025 Posted September 12, 2025 Don't even know their there when shooting.
Rooster Ron Wayne Posted September 12, 2025 Posted September 12, 2025 One with is a military model. One without is a civilian model. I can't tell no difference shooting either one.
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted September 12, 2025 Posted September 12, 2025 Nope, yule never even know they are there! --Dawg
Cowtown Scout, SASS #53540 L Posted September 13, 2025 Posted September 13, 2025 I even have a sling on mine BUT I’ve only shot it in side matches no main match yet.

Stick will need to be shorter as it hits the case web plus the thickness of the case head. Held in place with a little JB weld. Makes it slide easier as only the case heads touch the magazine. Made stop pins from a machine screw. After screwing in place cut the head off and filed the sharp edges off. The stop pins keeps the stick from locking up the action.

H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619 Posted September 14, 2025 Posted September 14, 2025 Ditto on the spacer stick. It really helps. And, oh yeah, keep it IN your rifle when not in use or you will lose it. As far as the sling swivels go, I don't even notice them. I did get a replica sling for it, but the front hook, is just that, a hook through the eye on the barrel. Tends to fall out. So, I took the sling off.
Lucky R. K. Posted September 14, 2025 Posted September 14, 2025 I have the 18-1/2" model in 44-40. If I set the bullet deeper in the brass than normal, I am able to load ten cartridges, barely. I finally trimmed some 44 magnum cases to 45 Cowboy Special length and installed one of Bill English's 45 Cowboy Special carriers. Now I can easily get 10 rounds loaded and have to use a spacer stick. Bill's carrier doesn't care if you are shooting 44's or 45's. Lucky
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted September 14, 2025 Posted September 14, 2025 Above, Henry with Sling and examples of "Stick, Mark 1, A1" Short stick is for a "normal" cartridge stack and the longer one if for a stack C45S. I used cut down 45 Schofield cases and brass screws for the stops. Lucky R. K., I also have an 18.5 Carbine. .45 Colt and when loaded with 45 Schofield with 180Gr or 200Gr RNFP it will hold 10. Not much help for a 44-40 though.
Lucky R. K. Posted September 14, 2025 Posted September 14, 2025 Mr. Maker, to use one of your terms, the little Henry works "a treat" with the cut down 44 mag's. Lucky

Colorado Coffinmaker Posted September 14, 2025 Posted September 14, 2025 I forgot to mention, as I showed the sling mounted on my "Martial" Henry, one CANNOT use the sling to aid in actually shooting in CAS. No rule against the sling just "being there." Attaching the sling is just for "show and tell." I found the sling looks really trix but actually, it just gets in the way.
Mezcal Charlie Posted September 15, 2025 Author Posted September 15, 2025 Thanks for all the info and encouragement! I should have it by middle of the week and will report on shooting it then. It’ll be my black powder rifle but could get promoted to “the” rifle status depending. I feel much better about the sling mounts now. And after rewatching Dances With Wolves realize Dunbars 1860 had them so I’m in good company 😉
Cpt Dan Blodgett, SASS #75655 Posted September 15, 2025 Posted September 15, 2025 I put an angle on the bottom of my stick that allows the mag carrier to push it back towards muzzle to take care of slightly misplaced stop screw
Sedalia Dave Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 Here is a pic of the ones I have made.
