Subdeacon Joe Posted September 9, 2025 Posted September 9, 2025 I was raised near Camp Pendleton in the '60s and '70s, so these were a common sight. Very distinct sound.

Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L Posted September 9, 2025 Posted September 9, 2025 rode in them a lot in RVN. 1st Cav was Airmobile. still can tell by their sound when they fly over
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted September 9, 2025 Posted September 9, 2025 Someone here or nearby has at least six that they fly every so often. The passed overhead at ball game and one old vet almost had a heart attack when he heard them. His friend told him it was a beautiful sound (and I agree 100%) because when you heard that wupwupwupwup it meant help was coming or already there. I had many miles riding Hueys all over south Vietnam.
Still hand Bill Posted September 9, 2025 Posted September 9, 2025 Supposedly that distinctive sound is due to the rotor tips getting close to or even breaking the sound barrier.
