Oh sorry, this Saturday Aug 30 sign up at 8:30 shoot at 9:30. I don’t think they’ll be too many shooters. This is a trial run so we’ll see how it goes.

Posted

We do similar on months with 5th Saturday's. We call it our Moonshiner Match.

Five stages.

Set up so people can shoot either cowboy action or Moonshiner.

Out of curiosity, is SASS legal ammo still required or are paper targets used instead of steel?  I could see how a shoot like this could attract a lot of new shooters to the club.

No restrictions on lead only ammo. 9mm is what folks will mostly use. Some may use .45acp but no high powered rifle ammo, all pistol caliber only including.22’s.

We just had our annual Miami Vice match a couple days ago at the Green Mountain Regulators.  Any guns, with lead bullets at CAS velocities.  Semi-autos and pump shotguns use Wild Bunch procedures.  The cowboys and miami vice guys shoot together.  Always lots of fun.  This year I shot gunfighter with a Diamondback .22 in left hand and King Cobra .38 in right hand. I used to shoot the rifle targets with a Browning Buckmark with red-dot scope, but that is out of commission so I just used the '73.  Full auto Mac-10's and Thompsons sometimes show up.  Here's Jim Brown:

I'll be doing an update on this shoot shortly as soon as I get the info from the MD!

I can't make it, way too far away.

Do have some questions:

Do SASS costume/dress rules apply?

Would an SBR be allowed? Or incidentally and occasionally shouldering a pistol?

A yes to all questions sounds fun.

Yes SBR is fine as long as it’s pistol caliber. No costuming unless you want to dress like John Wick 😂

That is somewhat badass... Have not had a black dress shirt in a long time, never had a black tie.

BTW, my AK-V loves to "bump." Is round count limited? It will triple tap easily, very entertaining and might fit the Wick motif.

Not sure what the ammo round count will be.

This sounds flat out super interesting, but I won’t be able to make it. However I’m intrigued enough to ask a few questions. Is it going to be a 10-10-4  format? If your semi auto pistol holds 10 rounds can you load it up and go, or do you need two mags with 5 rounds each, or do you need to carry two pistols? If you’re using a revolver, do you reload on the clock, speed loaders allowed, or need to carry two revolvers? If shooting a semi auto rifle, how many rounds are you allowed in the mag? Will a mag change be required?
Ok, I’ll stop asking questions but my brain didn’t stop thinking of more yet!   Hmmmm.  Wonder if I can shuffle my weekend plans around??????????

Yeah, with that gun (AK-V) I might be double or triple round count depending on how loosely I shoulder it "occasionally or incidentally." Shouldered firmly, it will just shoot one at a time. Fun toy. I like it. Of course, for all legal purposes. I'm real big on that.

I wish I could answer all your questions but I’m really not sure. This is the first shoot we’ll be doing. I know you need two magazines for pistol and since we’re allowed to use a lever rifle or .22 semi auto 10 rounds will suffice for the rifle. Shotgun needs to be a semi auto or pump, 97 will be okay. I’ll try and get more info tomorrow. Hope you can make it.

Packed up my modern guns and heading out at first light! Hope to see ya’ll there!🤠

Well that was fun! Shot my 9mm handguns, 10/22 rifle and my pump shotgun. We didn’t even write down the times, unless you wanted. 3 fun stages. 32 rounds of pistol and rifle, 6 shotgun on every stage. I didn’t do great but I guess I did okay. We’re probably going to do this again. The 5th Saturday. Since there’s only 5 months with 5 Saturdays. and that includes a couple winter months it won’t be high on my list. For the record I like Cowboy much better but it’s nice to do something different sometimes. 🤠

We had 11 shooters yesterday and the weather was wonderful.

We use the timer and keep score but it's more for individual records.

I like shooting our 5th Saturday matches because I bring out my bedside/CCW pistol.  I feel it's good training for target acquisition and mag changes.  Getting to shoot a PCC and my home defense shotgun is just a bonus.

And in the spirit of things, I finally watched John Wick 4. Long flick. Weird lever gun.

We used the timer to start off the shooter but no one really cared about their scores!

Our club shoots an "Auto Challenge" the second Saturday of every month. very similar except no shotgun, just pistol and PCC. It's three stages and you shoot them each with your pistols and then your PCC. I just started going last month and it is a hoot and a half!

Did you use your metal  cowboy targets with fmj 9mm ammo and was there any issues with safty or damage to the targets?  Thanks Bullett

Posted

Our club has SOME AR-500 steel that is kept on one stage and that is where we shoot the auto challenge.

The majority of our targets are mild steel.

We require lead only at (roughly) cowboy velocities to keep from damaging our targets.

My 124gr lead 9mm ammo runs ~950 fps from a Glock 19 and ~1075 fps from a 16" AR9.

We put the targets out a little further to minimize the splatter from jacketed bullets. Everyone was shooting 9mm and/or .22’s. No high powered stuff. We used the regular targets we use for cowboy.

For our Miami Vice matches, it is all lead bullets.  You can buy 9mm lead (coated I think) ammo these days, but when we started a lot of people had to load their own and often they did it for the first time just before this match, so pistol jams were a regular occurrence!   45acp was usually better since folks used their Wild Bunch ammo.

We did the same.

Our pistol targets were roughly where our Cowboy rifle targets are and our rifle targets were another 5-10 paces beyond that.
