How to tell new production ruger Marlin 1894 vs older manufacturer

I have read that newer ruger made Marlin 1894s are made a lot better compared to ones made just a few years ago. How do I tell if the Marlin 1894s I’m looking at are ruger made (within the last two years) or are older stock prior to ruger taking over?

Via serial number.

 

All of the current production are round barrel.  If its got an  octagonal barrel its either a JM or Remlin manufacture.  The JM's will be so stamped.

I have a Marlin 1894CSS stainless steel in .357 I bought new in 2011. It was assembled by Remington with parts made by Marlin. The barrel is stamped "Rem".

Remington made are stamped ilion ny, ruger are mayodan nc.  Not sure on JM.

JMs are stamped on the left of the barrel by the receiver and marked North Haven, CT.

Those made by Ruger with have Ruger's name on it somewhere. I believe the S/N starts with RM. 

 

Those made during the time that Remington was making Marlins with have a R as the beginning of the S/N followed by a number. AFAIK all Remington made Marlins have the S/N on the side of the receiver

 

Those made by Marlin before Remington bought them will have a JM stamp on the barrel just forward of the receiver. The S/N will be on the tang.

Remington made Marlins have an MR at the beginning of their serial number, which is confusing if Ruger is using RM...same letters but transposed.  

 

ETA: I would add that going by serial number prefix is a better indicator between Marlin and Remington, as some JM stamped barrels were transfered to Remington after the North Haven plant closed and the rifles were completed in New York, but they'll have the MR serial numbers to reflect that.

Barrel markings on a new Ruger made Marlin 1894.  The serial number also begins with RM.

Sure wish Ruger had bought Marlin before letting Remington even get into the mix...the Marlin to Remington transition years led to a lot of quality control issues and defective products being sold to the public, until they finally got a handle on things, but then Remington went bankrupt...

I don’t know. But the Ruger made Marlins have the red bullseye, it’s just another way to spit one quickly.

Do you know if the barrel has the micro-groove or Ballard type rifling?

Might be wrong but I don’t believe Ruger is doing micro groove barrels. One article I found said cold hammer forged Ballard

To confuse things further, I have a JM Marlin 1894cs made for a big box store, so it has a birch stock with no bullseye...😉
